Module 1: Discussion Topic – Discuss Your Own Cultural Background and Music Culture

After completing the reading for Lesson One, please describe your own personal culture and music culture. Be sure to describe the songs or other music that make up the music of your surrounding culture as well as your own personal music culture.

Consider the following questions:

What ideas or assumptions do you have about the music you listen to?

What social and cultural factors enter into your beliefs?

Do you play any instruments that represent your culture? Do you play or like any instruments of a culture other than your own?

What in your life contributes to this personal music culture of yours?

What are some of the spoken or unspoken rules of your own music culture? What is considered acceptable or unacceptable?

Think of a song from your music culture. Can you think of an example of a situation where it would be inappropriate in your music culture to sing or play that song?
