Today’s students are looking for educational programs with ready access to course offerings wherever they are and flexibility in scheduling to meet their needs without the inconvenience of the place and time boundaries of classroom learning. This week, you will continue to focus on the use of advanced technology in nursing education, specifically teaching and learning through distance and online learning. Additionally, you will discuss: (1) evaluation designs and models of outcomes; (2) data collection procedures; and (3) the means to interpret, report, and use evaluation findings regardless of whether the education program is offered on-ground or online. Because nursing programs are offered through the use of various learning options and delivery systems, nursing faculty are challenged to provide innovative opportunities and to use valid and reliable evaluation processes of student learning, course, curriculum, and program outcomes, as well as their own teaching practices.

Distance education is broadly defined as instruction or education that
is delivered to students in a location other than that of the faculty. It is
where education, technology, and learning converge, and the World Wide
Web allows digital materials for education to be created, stored, accessed,
and interacted with over the Internet. Distance education allows students to
study without face-to-face contact with an instructor, during a time of their
choice, and at multiple places (home, work, learning centers, or wherever
the learner can access the information).
This week you will be discussing teaching and learning in distance
education, an overview of delivery systems in distance education, their
advantages and disadvantages, and pertinent information specific to each
media.
