This is an exciting time to study biology. Every day, hundreds of research articles are published in scholarly peer-reviewed scientific journals. Some of this research makes its way into the popular news as well, making it easier for the public to understand scientific findings, but also sometimes misrepresenting, exaggerating, or simplifying the scientific research. So, when we read about scientific processes in the popular news media, we always need to be critical consumers – to consider, for example, the original publication the research is based on, how the article represents the core principles of biology that we’ve learned about in this course, and the perspective and potential biases of the author and publication source. Not all popular publications are equally reliable or of equal quality. In this week’s discussion, you will choose a recent article on the important biological process of photosynthesis. While on face value it may not seem that exciting, photosynthesis is central to life on the planet. This process is not only at the core of a lot of biological peer-reviewed research articles, it is also something that is at the heart of topics in our current news cycle, like global warming and deforestation. Completion of this activity will help you master Module Outcome 4: Describe an overview of photosynthesis (CO2).
Begin by reading Chapters 6 and 7 in the textbook and the Module Notes. Then, find an article in the popular news media of interest to you that addresses a topic on any aspect of photosynthesis. For example, you may be interested in the impact of global warming on photosynthesis or on deforestation. If possible, find an article published within the last three years.

In your discussion, please include the following information:
Report the source of the information, both the news source and original publication of research if included, in APA format. For example, did you read a summary of the research article in a newspaper? If so, please include both the newspaper article and the research paper citations.
Describe the research that is being reported and summarize the article.
Compare and contrast the way photosynthesis is reported in this article with your textbook reading for this week. Do you think this article gives the reader a good understanding of the process and its importance? What is missing from the descriptions?
