Throughout this MBA program, you have been provided with multiple opportunities to consider the role of positive social change in business and beyond. How do you view yourself as an agent of positive social change? What do you feel are your most important takeaways from completing the coursework and discussing these topics with your colleagues? In this Discussion, you will discuss the Business Skill for Good of being an effective change agent and how you can apply the knowledge and skills you gained from this program to become or continue being an effective change agent.
To prepare: review the video Being an effective change agent (Walden University, 2021); reflect upon your journey throughout your MBA program and how your viewpoints, skills, and knowledge have changed; consider your perspective on what it means to be an effective agent for positive social change.
Post a synthesis of the skills and knowledge you developed throughout this MBA program that will enable you to be a more effective agent for positive social change, to include: (1) at least three important concepts you have learned or critical skills you have developed and how they will benefit you in the future; and (2) how you will apply the knowledge and skills you have gained, coupled with your experience and your personal interests and passions, to be a more effective change agent.
What makes an effective change agent?
A change agent is anyone who influences others to adopt new ideas, behaviors or systems. In Walden’s framing, positive social change means improving the lives of individuals, organizations and communities. Effective change agents combine a clear purpose with practical business skills: they understand data, build coalitions, communicate a vision and design solutions that are sustainable financially as well as socially. Change leadership is not limited to executives; it is the ability to influence and inspire action at any level of an organization (Akpoveta, 2019).

When I began this MBA program, I viewed positive social change mainly as something nonprofits and volunteers did. I now see that businesses can be powerful agents of social change when leaders make decisions that create both economic and social value. Three concepts and skills from the program will shape how I lead change in the future.
1. Strategic thinking that integrates purpose and profit. Courses in strategy taught me to use frameworks such as SWOT, the Balanced Scorecard and stakeholder analysis to connect an organization’s mission to measurable goals. I learned that social initiatives last only when they are part of the core strategy rather than side projects. In my career in health care operations, this will help me propose programs, such as community health partnerships, that support both patient outcomes and the organization’s financial sustainability.
2. Data-driven decision-making. Through finance, analytics and operations courses, I developed skills in analyzing data, building business cases and measuring results. Being able to show the return on investment of a social initiative, including reduced costs, improved retention or better community outcomes, makes it far more likely that leaders will support it. I now understand that passion persuades people to care, but evidence persuades them to act.
3. Change leadership and inclusive communication. Leadership and organizational behavior courses showed me that most change efforts fail because people are not engaged, not because the idea is wrong. I learned to communicate a clear vision, listen to concerns, involve employees in designing solutions and recognize progress. Discussions with colleagues from many industries and countries also helped me appreciate diverse perspectives and the importance of inclusion in any change effort.
Applying these skills. My passion is improving access to health care in underserved communities. I plan to combine my operations experience with these MBA skills to lead initiatives such as expanding telehealth and transportation support for patients in rural areas. I will start by building a business case with data on missed appointments and costs, forming a coalition of clinicians, community partners and finance leaders, and piloting the program with clear metrics before scaling. In my daily work, I will also model ethical decision-making, mentor colleagues and advocate for diverse voices in planning. Being an effective change agent, for me, means turning good intentions into well-designed, measurable and inclusive actions that improve people’s lives.
