CORE SKILL: this is a matrix-plus-analysis assignment. The matrix is the easy part; the ANALYSIS of why one article is stronger than another is where the grade lives.
THE TASK STRUCTURE: identify a topic of interest in your practice area → search and select 4 peer-reviewed articles → complete a research analysis matrix → then write an analysis of ONE article you found particularly compelling, and explain WHY.
THE MATRIX FIELDS, and what to actually put in them: full APA citation; the research question or purpose; the DESIGN (be specific — “quantitative” is not a design; “prospective cohort study” is); the SAMPLE (size, setting, sampling method, inclusion/exclusion criteria); the METHODS and instruments (and whether the instruments were VALIDATED — an unvalidated survey is a serious weakness); the key FINDINGS with effect sizes rather than just “significant”; the LIMITATIONS the authors acknowledge AND the ones they don’t; the LEVEL OF EVIDENCE (state which hierarchy you are using — Melnyk’s seven levels is standard in nursing).
THE ANALYSIS SECTION — what makes an article “compelling,” and be intellectually honest here, because the temptation is to say “it agreed with me”:
— METHODOLOGICAL RIGOR: was the design appropriate to the question? Was the sample adequately powered? Was randomization and blinding used where feasible? Was attrition handled with intention-to-treat?
— The strength of the CAUSAL CLAIM the design can support. A cross-sectional study cannot establish temporality, so however striking its association, it cannot tell you what causes what.
— APPLICABILITY: does the sample resemble YOUR patients? An intervention validated in academic medical centers may not transfer to a rural critical-access hospital, and saying so is a real critical observation.
— The distinction between STATISTICAL and CLINICAL significance: a statistically significant 2-point change on a 100-point scale may be clinically meaningless. Look for the MINIMAL CLINICALLY IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE.
— CONFLICTS OF INTEREST and funding source.
BE CRITICAL, NOT DEFERENTIAL. Peer review is a filter, not a guarantee — published studies are frequently underpowered, and “no significant difference” in a small trial is not evidence of no effect; it is a failure to look hard enough (ABSENCE OF EVIDENCE IS NOT EVIDENCE OF ABSENCE). A student who can identify a weakness in a published paper is demonstrating exactly the competency being assessed. A paper that praises all four articles equally has not analyzed anything.
