— TOO MANY RESULTS (thousands of hits). SOLUTION: add CONTROLLED VOCABULARY (MeSH terms in PubMed, CINAHL Headings), combine concepts with AND, apply limiters (peer-reviewed, date range, age group, publication type, English), and use field-specific searching (title/abstract rather than all-fields).
— TOO FEW RESULTS. SOLUTION: broaden with OR across synonyms, use TRUNCATION (nurs* → nurse, nurses, nursing), remove overly narrow limiters, explode a MeSH term to include narrower terms, and check the reference lists of the articles you DID find (backward citation chaining) and who has cited them since (forward chaining).
— THE VOCABULARY PROBLEM, which is the most instructive one: different authors use different words for the same concept (“pressure ulcer” vs. “pressure injury” vs. “decubitus ulcer” vs. “bedsore”). Keyword searching misses all the synonyms you didn’t think of. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT CONTROLLED VOCABULARY SOLVES — the indexer has already mapped all those terms to one heading. Explaining this in your reflection demonstrates that you understand what a database actually is, and it is the single best thing you can say.
— DISTINGUISHING PEER-REVIEWED from non-peer-reviewed sources; distinguishing PRIMARY research from commentary, editorials, and literature reviews.
— PAYWALLS and full-text access. SOLUTION: your university library’s full-text limiter, interlibrary loan, PubMed Central for open access.
— PREDATORY JOURNALS — a real and growing problem. Check whether the journal is indexed in reputable databases, whether it is in DOAJ, and whether the peer-review process is described.
— RELEVANCE vs. RECENCY tension.
EVALUATE THE ARTICLE YOU SELECTED: is it peer-reviewed? What is the design and what does it license? Is it within 5 years (if the rubric requires)? Who are the authors and what are their credentials and conflicts? Is the journal reputable and indexed? Does it actually answer your question, or merely mention it?
APA FORMATTING is graded explicitly and precisely: author(s), (year), title in SENTENCE CASE, Journal Title in Title Case and Italics, volume(issue), pages, DOI as a full https:// link. Get the hanging indent right. These are free marks and students throw them away.
THE REFLECTION should be honest and specific. “It was hard to find articles” earns nothing. “My initial keyword search for ‘burnout’ returned 40,000 results, mostly outside nursing; adding the CINAHL heading ‘Burnout, Professional’ and a limiter for acute-care settings reduced it to 312, and adding a five-year filter and ‘peer-reviewed’ brought it to 47 usable articles” earns full credit, because it shows the actual work of searching.
