Begin this activity by reflecting on your revised problem statement, research questions, and purpose statement. Select a research design and methods appropriate for a doctoral dissertation study that will serve as a plan for you to gather data and answer your research questions. Quantitative studies must demonstrate both internal and external validity (e.g., large, random samples, statistical power, and representativeness). Qualitative studies must demonstrate trustworthiness within the context of the specific qualitative design (e.g., credibility, dependability, transferability, confirmability). Replication studies are not permitted.
Access SAGE Research Methods in the university library, as well as the Best Practice Guide for Qualitative Research Design and Methods in Dissertations and the Best Practice Guide for Quantitative Research Design and Methods in Dissertations in the Dissertation Center, for a refresher on research terminology and helpful guidance.
Write 1-2 pages about the research design and methods you will use in your study.
Be sure to include the following:
• State the research design and methods you plan to use in your study, including the type of data you plan to collect. Describe and substantiate the appropriateness of your choices, given the stated problem statement, purpose statement, and research questions.
• State clearly how the proposed research design and methods will accomplish the study goals and why the design and methods you selected is the optimum choice for the proposed research.
• Provide support by citing appropriate seminal scholarly sources.
• Explain the ways in which you plan to gather data for your study.
• State how you plan to triangulate your (qualitative) data (if applicable).
• State your proposed sample size of the study population. This must be appropriate and justified based on the study design.
• Explain briefly how you intend to ensure research ethics and protect participants from harm.
• Explain briefly how you intend to analyze the data.
