Week 6 Assignments: The Role of Evidence-Based Practice in Professional Nursing
Due: Initial Post: Wednesday, 11:59 PM
Minimum of 2 Peer Responses: Sunday, 11:59 PM
Discussion Prompt:
Evidence-based practice integrates the best available research evidence with clinical expertise and patient preferences to improve patient outcomes and ensure safe, high-quality care.After completing the Week 6 readings and videos:Explain why evidence-based practice is considered a core competency for baccalaureate-prepared nurses.
Describe the five basic steps of the EBP process in your own words.
Formulate one clear PICO(T) question related to a common nursing practice issue (e.g., pain management, fall prevention, patient education, pressure injury prevention, or medication adherence).
Clearly label each element: P = Patient/Population/Problem
I = Intervention
C = Comparison (if applicable)
O = Outcome
T = Time (optional)
Discuss one potential barrier to implementing EBP in clinical settings and propose one realistic strategy to overcome that barrier.
Your initial post must be 300–350 words minimum. Support your discussion with at least two scholarly sources (textbook counts as one). Use APA 7th edition for in-text citations and the reference list.Response Requirements:
Reply substantively to at least two classmates. For each response (100–150 words), comment on their PICO question (suggest improvements if needed), share a related clinical example, or discuss how their identified barrier might appear in a specific healthcare setting.Grading Rubric (25 points): Clear explanation of EBP importance and steps (8 pts)
Well-formulated PICO(T) question (8 pts)
Discussion of barrier and strategy (5 pts)
Scholarly support, APA, and quality of peer responses (4 pts)
2. PICO Question Development and Literature Search Assignment
Due: Sunday, 11:59 PM
Points: 35 points Assignment Instructions:Complete the Evidence-Based Practice: PICO & Literature Search Worksheet (downloadable Word document in the Week 6 module).Part 1: Formulate a PICO(T) Question
Develop one focused PICO(T) question based on a nursing practice problem of your choice. The question should be relevant to professional nursing practice and answerable through research. Clearly identify each PICO element.Part 2: Conduct a Basic Literature Search
Using the PICO question you created:Search at least two appropriate databases (CINAHL, PubMed, Cochrane Library, or similar – accessible through your university library).
Locate two recent peer-reviewed research articles (published within the last 5–7 years) that could help answer your PICO question.
For each article, provide:Full APA 7th edition reference
Level of evidence (using the Levels of Evidence Pyramid)
A 2–3 sentence summary of how the article relates to your PICO question
One key finding that could inform nursing practice
Part 3: Short Reflection (150–200 words)
Reflect on the process: What did you learn about searching for evidence?
What challenges did you encounter, and how might this experience prepare you for future EBP work as a professional nurse?
Submission:
Fill in all sections of the worksheet and upload the completed Word document (.docx) to the assignment dropbox. Include a screenshot or copy of your search strategy (keywords, Boolean operators, limits used) if possible.Grading Criteria (35 points):Quality and clarity of the PICO(T) question (10 pts)
Appropriateness and relevance of the two selected articles (10 pts)
Accuracy of APA references and levels of evidence (6 pts)
Depth of reflection and connection to professional practice (7 pts)
Overall organization and professionalism (2 pts)
Tips for Success: Choose a realistic, focused clinical question (avoid overly broad topics like “cancer” or “mental health”).
Use Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) and appropriate filters (date, peer-reviewed, full text).
Remember: The goal is to learn the process, not to conduct a full systematic review.
