Week 3 Assignments: The Relevance of Nursing Theory in Today’s Practice
Nursing theories provide a unique lens through which nurses view patients, health, and the environment. Many practicing nurses initially question the practical value of theory, yet theory underpins every aspect of professional nursing care.
After completing the Week 3 readings and videos:
Select one nursing theorist/theory from the following list (or choose another with instructor approval):
Florence Nightingale – Environmental Theory
Jean Watson – Theory of Human Caring / Caritas Processes
Dorothea Orem – Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory
Callista Roy – Adaptation Model
Patricia Benner – Novice to Expert Theory
Madeleine Leininger – Culture Care Theory
In your initial post (minimum 300–350 words), address the following:
a. Summarize the central focus and key concepts of the theory in your own words.
b. Describe a specific clinical situation or patient population where this theory could meaningfully guide nursing practice (e.g., acute care, community health, pediatrics, mental health, or end-of-life care).
c. Explain how the theory would influence your nursing actions, assessment, or interventions in that situation. Give at least one concrete example.
d. Reflect: Why is it important for baccalaureate-prepared nurses to understand and apply nursing theory rather than relying solely on institutional protocols or physician orders?
Support your discussion with at least two scholarly sources (textbook counts as one; the second must be a peer-reviewed journal article or credible professional reference). Use APA 7th edition for citations and references.Response Requirements:
Reply substantively to at least two different classmates who selected different theorists. In each response (100–150 words), compare or contrast their chosen theory with yours, or discuss how the two theories could complement each other in practice. Pose one thoughtful question to extend the conversation.Grading Rubric (25 points): Accurate summary of theory and key concepts (8 pts)
Application to clinical practice with specific example (8 pts)
Reflection on importance of theory for BSN nurses (5 pts)
Scholarly support and APA formatting (2 pts)
Quality and timeliness of peer responses (2 pts)
