NUR3000 Foundations of Professional Nursing Course Description
This foundational course introduces students to the profession of nursing and the core concepts, values, and competencies required for baccalaureate-level professional nursing practice. Students explore the historical evolution of nursing, the development of professional identity, theoretical frameworks, the nursing process, ethical and legal responsibilities, evidence-based practice, and the nurse’s role within complex healthcare systems.Emphasis is placed on transitioning into the professional nursing role as a care provider, advocate, educator, leader, and change agent. Students examine contemporary issues in nursing, including patient safety, quality improvement, cultural competence, interprofessional collaboration, and the impact of social, political, and economic factors on healthcare delivery. Through critical reflection and application activities, students begin to integrate the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, the Code of Ethics for Nurses, and the AACN Essentials of Baccalaureate Education into their personal philosophy of nursing.The course lays the groundwork for all subsequent nursing courses by fostering clinical judgment, professional communication, lifelong learning, and a commitment to holistic, person-centered care.Prerequisites: Admission to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program.
