Exact Week 8 Discussion Prompt
Discussion: The Role of the RN/APRN in Policy-Making
Word cloud generators have become popular tools for meetings and team-building events. Teams or groups use these applications to input words they feel best describe their team. This provides a visual representation of the common values and goals of the team. In this Discussion, you will explore the role of the RN/APRN in policy-making and build your own word cloud to represent what you believe are the most important aspects of this role.
To Prepare:
Review the Resources and reflect on the role of professional nurses in policy evaluation.
Revisit the Congress.gov website (provided in the Resources) and consider the role of RNs and APRNs in policy-making.
Reflect on potential opportunities that may exist for RNs and APRNs to participate in the policy-making process.
By Day 3 of Week 8
Post an explanation of at least two opportunities that exist for RNs and APRNs to actively participate in policy-making. Explain some of the challenges that these opportunities may present and describe how you might overcome these challenges. Finally, recommend two strategies you might use to better advocate for or communicate the existence of these opportunities to participate in policy-making. Be specific and provide examples.
By Day 6 of Week 8
Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days (and not the same day as your initial post) in one or more of the following ways:
Ask a probing question, substantiated with additional background information, evidence, or research.
Share an insight from having read your colleagues’ postings, synthesizing the information to provide new perspectives.
Offer and support an alternative perspective using readings from the classroom or from your own research in the Walden Library.
Validate an idea with your own experience and additional research.
Make a suggestion based on additional evidence drawn from readings or after synthesizing multiple postings.
Expand on your colleagues’ postings by providing additional insights or contrasting perspectives based on readings and evidence.
Key Requirements & Notes
Use APA 7th edition for in-text citations and references.
Support your post with evidence from required readings (e.g., Milstead & Short, Health Policy and Politics; Congress.gov resources; articles on nursing and policy-making).
Common opportunities discussed by students include:
Serving on committees or boards (e.g., state BON, hospital policy committees, professional organizations like ANA).
Contacting legislators (writing letters, meeting with representatives, testifying).
Joining or leading nursing associations and advocacy groups.
Participating in research that informs policy or running for office.
Challenges often include time constraints, lack of knowledge/training in policy, intimidation by the political process, or workplace barriers. Strategies for overcoming them and advocating for opportunities should be practical and evidence-based.
The initial post should be substantive (typically 2–3 well-developed paragraphs).
Important: This is the standard prompt used in recent terms for Week 8 Discussion 2. Some instructors may add minor variations (e.g., emphasis on creating a personal word cloud or specific examples), but the core requirements—at least two opportunities, challenges + how to overcome them, and two strategies—remain consistent.
