Policy & Advocacy for Improving Population Health NURS 6050 Week 2 Assignment
Week 2 Assignment: Agenda Comparison Grid and Fact Sheet or Talking Points Brief
Assignment Title: Agenda Comparison Grid and Fact Sheet (or Talking Points Brief)
To Prepare:
Review the agenda priorities of the current/sitting U.S. president and the two previous presidential administrations.
Select an issue related to population health (or healthcare) that was addressed by these presidential administrations (current and previous).
Consider how you would communicate the importance of a healthcare issue to a legislator/policymaker or a member of their staff for inclusion on an agenda.
Use your Week 1 Discussion post to help with this assignment.
Resources:
Be sure to review the Learning Resources before completing this activity.
Use the Agenda Comparison Grid Template found in the Learning Resources (a Word document provided in the course).
The Assignment (1- to 2-page Comparison Grid + 1-Page Analysis + 1-page Fact Sheet or Talking Points Brief)
This is an APA-style paper that must include:
A title page
An introduction with a purpose statement
The grid, analysis, and narrative sections
A conclusion
References (use 2–3 course resources and at least 2 outside scholarly resources)
Part 1: Agenda Comparison Grid
Use the Agenda Comparison Grid Template and complete it based on the current/sitting U.S. president and the two previous presidential administrations and their agendas related to the population health concern you selected.
Be sure to address the following in the grid:
Identify and provide a brief description of the population health concern you selected and the factors that contribute to it.
Describe the administrative agenda focus related to the issue you selected.
Identify the allocations of resources that the current and previous presidents dedicated to this issue.
Explain how each of the presidential administrations approached the issue.
Identify the priorities of each administration related to the issue.
Part 2: Agenda Comparison Grid Analysis
Using the information you gathered in Part 1, address the following in a 1-page analysis:
Which administrative agency would most likely be responsible for helping you address the healthcare issue you selected? Why is this agency the most helpful?
How do you think your selected healthcare issue might get on the agenda? How does it stay on the agenda?
Who would you choose to be the entrepreneur/champion/sponsor of the healthcare issue you selected, and justify your selection?
Part 3: Fact Sheet or Talking Points Brief
Develop a 1-page Fact Sheet or Talking Points Brief that you could use to communicate the importance of the healthcare issue to a legislator/policymaker or a member of their staff for inclusion on an agenda.
The Fact Sheet/Talking Points should:
Clearly and concisely communicate the importance of the issue.
Summarize the impact of recent or proposed policy on the issue.
Include relevant data, statistics, and evidence-based information.
Be written in a professional, persuasive tone suitable for policymakers.
Highlight opportunities for nurse advocacy.
Note: Some terms phrase Part 3 as “Fact Sheet or Talking Points Brief.” Either format is acceptable as long as it is one page and serves as an advocacy tool.
Submission Deadline:
By Day 7 of Week 2
Submit your final version of Part 1: Agenda Comparison Grid, Part 2: Agenda Comparison Grid Analysis, and Part 3: Fact Sheet or Talking Points Brief.
Additional Requirements
The entire submission is treated as one APA paper (title page, introduction/purpose, body with grid + analysis + narrative, conclusion, references).
Use proper APA formatting (7th edition) throughout, including citations and references.
The grid itself does not need to be double-spaced, but the analysis and narrative sections do.
Focus on population health impacts (cost, quality, access, equity).
Grading Focus (from standard rubric)
Accuracy and depth of the Agenda Comparison Grid.
Quality of analysis regarding administrative agencies, agenda setting, and champions.
Clarity, persuasiveness, and professionalism of the Fact Sheet/Talking Points.
Integration of course resources and scholarly evidence.
Nurse’s role in agenda setting and advocacy (often addressed in the justification sections).
Important Tip:
Many students build directly on the population health topic they used in their Week 1 Presidential Agendas Discussion. This creates continuity and saves time.
This assignment is a foundational one in NURS 6050 — it teaches you to objectively compare presidential approaches while developing real-world advocacy tools (grids and fact sheets) that MSN-prepared nurses can use when influencing policy.
