Leadership, Management, and Contemporary Issues NURS 6600 Week 3 Assignment
Week 3 Assignment: Practicum Journal Entry 1 and Time Log
Assignment Overview
This is the first of three required practicum journal entries in the course. The journal provides an opportunity for reflective practice as you immerse yourself in the practicum setting. You will document your early practicum experiences, link them to your approved professional development objectives (from the Week 1 PPEP) and practicum project plan (from Week 2), and demonstrate synthesis of concepts from prior MSN courses in leadership, management, and contemporary healthcare issues.
In addition to the journal reflection, you must submit your Time Log from Meditrek for faculty review. Hours must be entered daily in Meditrek throughout the term.
To Prepare:
Review your approved Practicum Professional Experience Plan (PPEP) from Week 1 and your Practicum Project Plan Proposal from Week 2.
Reflect on your practicum experiences to date (observations, activities, interactions with preceptor and staff, challenges encountered, and application of leadership/management principles).
Consider how your experiences relate to nurse executive competencies (e.g., AONL competencies), leadership theories, organizational dynamics, human resources, quality outcomes, or contemporary issues such as workforce challenges, quality improvement, or health equity.
Use the NURS 6600 Practicum Journal template (Word document provided in the course).
Ensure you have logged all practicum hours accurately in Meditrek up to this point (aim for approximately 36–42 hours by the end of Week 3, following your approved timeline).
Assignment Instructions:
Complete two components and submit them as separate documents or combined per instructor guidance:
Practicum Journal Entry 1 (typically 1–2 pages or as guided by the template)
In the Journal section of the template, write a reflective entry that includes the following:
Document specific objective(s) from your PPEP or project plan that you have been working toward during this early phase of the practicum (e.g., Weeks 1–3).
Describe a problem, issue, situation, or observation from your practicum experience (no more than half a page). Maintain confidentiality — do not include names or identifying information.
Analyze what you have observed using appropriate concepts, principles, or theories from your specialty (nurse executive/leadership & management). Draw on evidence from at least three peer-reviewed sources (scholarly articles, standards from AONL, ANA, or regulatory bodies).
Give special attention to events or practices that vary from (or align with) the scholarly literature.
Explain how the observed situation was handled in a manner consistent with theory/concepts and in a manner that was inconsistent (if applicable). Discuss implications for leadership, management, or addressing contemporary issues.
Reflect on your personal growth, challenges faced, and how experiences support achievement of course outcomes and positive social change.
Time Log
Generate and submit the current Time Log report from Meditrek (include all hours logged to date).
Your preceptor must review and sign/approve the time log in Meditrek.
Total hours should align with your approved PPEP timeline (cumulative progress toward the required 144 hours).
By Day 7 of Week 3
Submit the following via the Assignment submission link(s) in Canvas:
Completed Practicum Journal Entry 1 (using the provided template).
Time Log report from Meditrek.
Submission Requirements:
Journal: Microsoft Word document, APA 7th edition formatting for citations and references.
File name examples: LastName_FirstName_NURS6600_Week3_Journal and LastName_FirstName_NURS6600_Week3_TimeLog.
SafeAssign will be used for the journal entry.
Grading (Typical 100-point Rubric per Component):
Depth and specificity of reflection, linkage to objectives, and connection to practicum experiences (30–40 points).
Quality of analysis using scholarly evidence, theories, and nurse executive concepts (30–40 points).
Critical examination of alignment/inconsistencies with literature and implications for practice (20 points).
Professional writing, APA formatting, and completeness of Time Log (including accuracy and preceptor approval) (10–20 points).
Important Notes for Week 3:
Continue accumulating practicum hours consistently (do not wait until the end of the course).
Use this journal to build toward the mid-practicum reflection in Week 7 and the final synthesis in Week 11.
If you have not yet started significant practicum hours, focus on initial observations, preceptor meetings, and orientation activities.
Contact the Office of Field Experience if your preceptor has not received Meditrek access.
Refer to the Practicum Manual for all policies on logging hours and reflective journaling.
Note: Exact wording, template structure, page length expectations, or number of required references can vary slightly by instructor or term. Always check your Canvas classroom for the precise assignment instructions, due date (typically Sunday by 10:59 p.m. Central Time), downloadable journal template, rubric, and any instructor announcements for your section of NURS 6600.
This Week 3 assignment emphasizes early immersion, reflective practice, and accountability for practicum hours while linking real-world experiences to advanced leadership and management concepts.
