The purpose of this assignment is to help students strengthen academic writing, critical thinking, and research appraisal skills by completing a structured literature review on a primary care topic relevant to advanced practice nursing.

In this assignment, students will locate and review five (5) peer-reviewed scholarly articles and develop a well-organized literature review that summarizes current evidence, identifies common themes across studies, and discusses implications for primary care Nurse Practitioner practice.

This is an introductory literature review assignment designed for students who are beginning graduate-level scholarly writing and evidence evaluation.

Learning Objectives:

By completing this assignment, students will be able to:

1. Select a primary care topic relevant to advanced practice nursing and Nurse Practitioner practice.

2. Conduct a focused academic literature search using scholarly databases.

3. Select appropriate peer-reviewed research articles related to a clinical topic.

4. Summarize research evidence clearly and accurately.

5. Compare findings across studies and identify trends, themes, or gaps in evidence.

6. Discuss how evidence supports clinical decision-making and patient care in primary care settings.

Assignment Instructions;

Step 1: Select a Primary Care Topic

Choose ONE topic relevant to primary care. Your topic should be specific enough to be supported by published research and appropriate for the Nurse Practitioner role.

Examples of acceptable topics include (but are not limited to):

. Hypertension management strategies in adults

. Type 2 diabetes self-management education interventions

. Lifestyle counseling approaches for obesity/overweight

. Smoking cessation interventions in primary care

. Depression/anxiety screening and early intervention

. Medication adherence strategies in chronic illness

. Vaccination hesitancy and patient education strategies

Important: If you are unsure whether your topic is appropriate, choose a topic that is common in primary care and supported by multiple studies.

Step 2: Locate 5 Peer-Reviewed Scholarly Articles

You must locate and use five (5) peer-reviewed scholarly journal articles related to your topic.

Required criteria for your articles:

Peer-reviewed scholarly journal sources Evidence-based research articles (quantitative, qualitative, systematic review, meta-analysis, or integrative review) Related to primary care patient outcomes, interventions, screening, or management Published within the last 5 years (exceptions may be allowed with instructor approval) Must support the topic and contribute meaningful evidence

2. Introduction (Approximately 1 page)

In the introduction, address the following:

. Explain why the topic is important in primary care practice

3. Search Strategy (½ page minimum)

Describe how you located the five articles. Include:

4 . Literature Review: Summary and Synthesis of Evidence (Approximately 3–5 pages)

This is the main section of your paper.

You will summarize and synthesize the evidence from your five articles by doing the following:

A. Summarize each study (briefly, but clearly):

For each article, include:

. Purpose of the study

. Population/sample (who was studied)

. Setting (primary care, community clinic, outpatient, etc.)

. Design/methods (qualitative, RCT, cohort study, systematic review, etc.)

. Key findings/results

. Any relevant limitations noted by the authors

B. Synthesize across the five studies:

Instead of listing the five studies separately with no connection, your review should show patterns by organizing your discussion into themes such as:

. Common interventions that improved outcomes

. Barriers and facilitators to success

. Patient education approaches

. Adherence and behavior change strategies

. Health equity considerations (if applicable)

. Gaps in research or inconsistent findings

Goal: demonstrate that you can compare evidence and create meaning from multiple research sources.

5. Discussion: Implications for Nurse Practitioner Practice (Approximately 1–2 pages)

In this section, connect the evidence to clinical decision-making as an NP/APRN.

Include:

. How the evidence supports or improves primary care practice

. Recommendations for patient education and counseling

. Practice changes that could improve outcomes (screening, follow-up, care coordination, etc.)

. Clinical considerations: age, comorbidities, cultural factors, access to care

. Any relevant guidelines or best practice implications (only if supported by your selected research)

. Identify at least one realistic way the NP can apply the evidence in a clinical setting

6. Conclusion (½–1 page)

Provide a strong closing paragraph(s) that:

. Summarizes what the current evidence shows overall

. Reinforces why this topic matters in primary care

. Notes one key gap in evidence or an area for future research

. Ends with a clear takeaway statement for NP practice

7. References Page (APA 7th edition)

. Include all five required articles

. Format in correct APA 7th edition style
