In your career as an I/O professional, you need to be able to analyze your legal and ethical responsibilities. This might include your ability to apply the APA Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct to situations you face in your work.
Review the Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct from the American Psychological Association.

Imagine you are an I/O psychology professional who works for a prestigious state-wide university system. You have been approached by a wealthy and powerful elected official in your state who wants to make a very large monetary donation to your institution. The administration of your university system has expressed their support for his donation. During a meeting with you regarding this donation, he stated that he expects you to influence the university president and administration to create specific programs, including naming rights for a large new building, as well as support specific legislation he intends to sponsor.
Colleagues within your community inform you that this individual has allegedly been involved with organized crime, has evaded conviction for various alleged crimes, including tax fraud, alleged misuse of campaign funds, and has allegedly placed undue pressure on other elected officials and nonprofit organizations to undertake programs and practices that they deem less than ethical.
As you prepare for a meeting with the administration to discuss your position on this situation, you decide to review the APA Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct and determine if what he has requested violates the legal and ethical codes to which you ascribe. The 5 key principles in the APA manual are:
Principle A: Beneficence and Nonmaleficence
Principle B: Fidelity and Responsibility
Principle C: Integrity
Principle D: Justice
Principle E: Respect for People’s Rights and Dignity
You decide to prepare a 700-1100 word outline that you will use to explain and defend your decision on whether to recommend acceptance of the donation and the donor’s conditions.
Include the following in your outline:
An explanation of your decision
An explanation of the ethical and legal considerations inherent in the situation that impact your decision (these ethical issues should be different from the APA code portion)
3 General Principles and Ethical Standards from the APA Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct that you used in making your decision about accepting a donation from the individual noted above
An analysis of how and why you believe these elements from the APA document support your decision
Include a minimum of 3 peer-reviewed journal articles related to the application of legal and ethics to your decision. The journal articles should be used to support the information throughout the outline and not just in a separate section. A great place to include information from the journal articles would be in the ethical and legal section. They should not just be listed at the end of the assignment.
Format your assignment using basic APA standards, including a separate title and reference page and the correct use of citations. Note: This assignment does not need to be double-spaced. As this is a professional assignment, the first person (I/me) statements should not be used. Using we is considered more professional.
Submit your assignment as a word document.
With a full sentence outline:
Each roman numeral (I, II, III, IV…) indicates the start of a new paragraph. So I. is the first sentence of the introduction, II. is the first sentence of the first paragraph of the body, III. is the first sentence of the second paragraph of the body, and so on.
Each capital letter (A, B, C, D…) indicates a main point within the structure of the paragraph. So in our introduction, A. is the attention getter, B. is another attention getter, C. describes a point that makes the topic personal, and D. is the thesis statement.
Each Arabic numeral (1, 2, 3, 4…) indicates a sentence or piece of supporting evidence for each main point. So in the first body paragraph (II.), point A. is a general statement that needs some additional support, so 1. provides a supporting statement of fact and the citation of where that information came from. 2. provides another sentence with supporting evidence, as does 3.
The organization for the outline would have something along these lines:
I. My decision is …
A. The reason is
support sentence one for decision
support sentence two for decision
support sentence three for decision – using some research in this area would be helpful
II. Legal implications for decision – support sentences should have citations and be based off of research
A. Legal implication based off of research

support sentence two
support sentence three
B. Legal implication based off of research.
