Which type of special education license area do you have and how many years of teaching? ABS and EBD licenses and I think I’m at year 15 as a licensed teacher. I did 1.5 years as a part before teaching.
What types of special needs children are currently working with and curriculum? I use Wilson Reading for my classes. I have students with all disabilities. This year students have SLD, EBD, ASD, DCD-MM, OHD, DHD.
Do you have any students with IEPs or 504 plans? Every student in all of my classes has IEPs. They cannot be in my class without an IEP since this is a specialized reading class for students with disabilities.
Why did you become a special Ed teacher, and what do you find most rewarding about it? Learning was hard for me. The traditional way did not always work, so I wanted to work with children like myself to show them that they can learn when we figure out how they learn best.
What is your teaching philosophy? The work you put in is the result you will getà this is what I tell my students. For me personally, I would say find a healthy balance for yourself so you don’t get burnt out.

In your teaching, how do you promote inclusion and equity for students with diverse abilities or backgrounds?
What are some of the challenges you face in protecting students from harmful conditions (physical, emotional, or health-related)? I cannot control what happens outside of my classroom. I provide a safe space for students in my classroom where they can be their authentic selves, but sadly, I cannot control what is going on at home. So I guess I try to show up and show them stability, safety and respect.
How do you handle sensitive student information in your day-to-day work (IEPs, behavior plans, medical information)? I don’t share what isn’t supposed to be shared. We have a system here where teachers that have a specific student can see all important documents.
What does “reasonable disciplinary action” look like in your classroom, especially in a special education setting? I am all about figuring out the “why” to behavior. If a student is trying to avoid work, I won’t write referrals and send them out. I often have private conversations so I don’t embarrass students; but I also do this after I have built a positive relationship with them.
How do you maintain professional boundaries with students, parents, colleagues, and other staff?
Students: I let them know I am the teacher; I also set expectations that are equal so that they see fairness and not that I am treating a student differently. I also show them respect and kindness.
Parents/Colleagues: I work “with” not against, even when I don’t agree, I try to help everyone find a student-centered resolution. I also try to create respect so that they feel that can come to me anytime.
How do you decide when to delegate tasks or responsibilities to paraprofessionals or other licensed staff?
This isn’t always my strong suit as I want others to “just do”. Sadly, that isn’t the case, so I usually just have conversations with other staff to see what they are willing to do and then allow them to help.
How do you ensure the accuracy and honesty of your own records — like student assessments, progress reports, or IEP documentation? I have a few different ways to collect data. I have spreadsheets that show what students know before I teach them and then what they’ve learned since I taught them. So I look at the before and after results. I used this to determine if students are ready for new skills. Progress reports and IEP documentation is usually on our online platform. I have made forms for teachers to fill out if needed as well.
How do you handle situations when colleagues might be acting in ways that conflict with the ethics code (for example, making negative statements about students or colleagues)? I don’t get involved, honestly. If it’s too much, I’ll try and give them a different perspective.
How do you reflect on your responsibilities as a licensed teacher, especially in terms of the code of ethics? I guess I’ve never thought about this.

How do you decide when to delegate tasks or responsibilities to paraprofessionals or other licensed staff? I delegate tasks when students are working independently with minimum assistance needed. Paraprofessionals can help reteach the lesson if needed.

I document student progress on a data sheet when students are working on their individual IEP goals and objectives. I save their work and documents if they need assistance or if they do assignments on their own.

I would have an open conversation with them before or after school. If that conversation was not resolved I would talk to the Business manager and principal for guidance.
