How are the “managerial and messianic modes” (Peterson 1994) congruent with the role of spiritual director?
Everything we do is leadership! We are called to be servant-leaders who cast vision and ensure that it is implemented. We are called to be shepherd leaders with strong and gentle hearts while protecting, providing, and feeding our flocks. We are called to have willing and joyful hearts even in the midst of the mundane. Peterson (1994) speaks of the pastor (ministry leader) as a spiritual director.
How are the “managerial and messianic modes” (Peterson 1994) congruent with the role of spiritual director? How does a pastor get to the heart of pastoral ministry while typing bulletins, ordering paper products, and sending e-blasts? How does the pastor invite people who gather to worship, know God loves them, and partake of the Lord’s Supper, but are not aware of God’s presence in their daily lives, to expand their myopic vision? What about people whose blindness prevents them from seeing God’s presence and activity or people whose focus is on achieving the “American dream”?
The pastor is “set in the community to bring recognition to what is blurred and forgotten” (Peterson 1994, 182).
Tasks:
Review the following from your textbook readings:
Hansen, Chapter 1, Sections titled: THE PASTOR IS A PARABLE OF JESUS CHRIST and THE WAY OF THE CROSS
There are two parts to this assignment.
Part I:
Choose one scenario below and submit your responses to the question at the end of the scenario in 200–300 words.
Scenario 1: Discuss the integration of the managerial, messianic, and spiritual director roles of pastors. How do pastors help refocus their people to see the “new life” that Christ came to bring? What is the role of the Spirit in giving people “Jesus eyes”?
Scenario 2: How do ministry leaders (directors, chaplains, and others) integrate the managerial, messianic, and spiritual director roles? How do they help their constituents “see Jesus” and notice His grace and presence in their lives?
Please feel free to apply the questions to the role in which you are called to serve God.
Part II:
Submit your responses to the following questions in 750–1000 words:
Where does your power to do pastoral ministry lie?
How do you, as a servant leader and shepherd, become a parable of Jesus and deliver Him to the people you meet (Hansen 1994, 30)?
In what ways is your life a parable of Jesus?
