MGT 6681 Organization Development and Change SUMMATIVE ESSAY
This essay is an extension of your previously written Application Essay, which constituted an organization development (OD) diagnosis. In this extension, you will enhance your work by inserting an implementation plan and an evaluation plan between the Issue Diagnosis section and the Discussion. As before, apply your concepts correctly, as presented in this class rather than how they may appear in other sources.
To convert your Application Essay into your Summative Essay, perform three tasks: (a) add the implementation plan as described below; (b) add the evaluation plan as described below; (c) update your abstract and your discussion in light of new perspectives raised in the process of adding the noted two sections; and (d) reread your Application Essay in search of opportunities to correct errors, add qualifying sources, or extend commentary.
Format: APA style (7th edition), double-spaced, Times New Roman 12pt font, appropriate page formatting.
Review the posted sample APA-styled paper, professional version, with abstract (in the Start Here module).
Structure: title page, abstract, body, and references (see sample paper), separated by page breaks.
Review your previously written abstract after updating the paper, then make adjustments as needed to fit the updated content.
Old & New Content (in the context of the prior content):
Introductory Section. No changes aside from routine corrections considered in ordinary post-editing.
Strategic Analysis. No changes aside from routine corrections considered in ordinary post-editing.
Organization Diagnosis. No changes aside from routine corrections considered in ordinary post-editing.
Issue Diagnosis. No changes aside from routine corrections considered in ordinary post-editing.
Implementation Plan {new section} [main section header—centered, bold] [~1¾ pages]. Four paragraphs: (a) provide a brief overview of Kotter’s (2017) eight-step change model, and explain that you will design your implementation plan using that model (at least two sentences); (b) walk through how you plan to unfreeze the current
state of the process identified for change, via Kotter’s (2017) phases 1–3; (c) walk through how you plan to move to the new state via Kotter’s (2017) phases 4–5; and (d) walk through how you plan to freeze the new state via Kotter’s (2017) phases 7 and 8.
This plan will require some imagination. The more familiar you are with your actual organization, the more easily you can work out the likely scenario at each phase in realistic terms. A good plan is the result of careful thinking over several iterations.
Evaluation Plan {new section} [main section header—centered, bold] [~1¾ pages]. Four paragraphs: (a) explain what this section will address (at least two sentences); (b) determine who will collect the data to assess the current and post-intervention states of the process and why this choice is logical; (c) identify what measures to use, when to conduct the observations, and why this choice is logical; and (d) identify who will receive the results and why this choice is logical.
For the measures, think in terms of what the identified process should do. Process specifications entail dimensional boundaries (e.g., length, mass, durability, suitability) that distinguish success from error, even if no one has ever stated them in the past.
Discussion. Add mentions of the new content (viz., the implementation plan and the evaluation plan) to the discussion. Review the full discussion to consider further adjustments based on the new content. Lastly, be sure to apply the kinds of routine corrections that are appropriate in ordinary post-editing.
Standards. Minimum length = 2,400 words (body only; see syllabus for length calculation). Cite at least the textbook plus six qualifying sources based on the criteria described in the syllabus (purple section).
The length and citation criteria subsume those of the application essay. If you happened to meet the prior 1,400-word criterion and five qualifying articles exactly, then this essay will require 1,000 more words and one more qualifying article.
