The Article I came across by Palmer (2023) covers a lawsuit by three amazon Employees over Gender Discrimination and retaliation by amazon after they alleged pay inequity.
The three issues in the article that can relate to reading in our textbook are
Women are generally offered lower pay and according to Mumby et al (2018) women continue to experience glass ceiling phenomenon where they reach a certain level and have difficulty progressing higher.
Tokensim- a person finds himself or herself identified as a minority in a dominant culture. Given “token”- looked at a s representative of all women versus and individual Mumby et al (2018)
Critical Feminism-views gender as socially constructed phenomenon, second views it as not an organizational variable that can be isolated and studied. See as a defining, constitutive feature. Mumby et al (2018)
Mumby et al (2018) gives an example of Critical Feminism as follows: “a female airline pilot might have to work very hard in her organizational performance to be seen as equally competent as her male colleagues. As Ashcraft (2005; Ashcraft & Mumby, 2004) has shown, the airline industry historically has deliberately constructed an image of the airline pilot as coolly rational, professional, in control, and paternalistic—a gendered professional identity intended to make us feel safe while we are flying in a metal tube at 30,000 feet. Similarly, the role of flight attendant has been deliberately constructed in a gendered manner to convey warmth, nurturance, and attentiveness; this feminized role perfectly complements the masculine role of the pilot.”
In this very same way, we see this is what the employees are trying to bring to light is the roles that employers place on employees because of societal norms. Women are lesser, more emotionally motivated individuals. They feel they must work harder for equal pay and they feel they are being punished for noticing an obvious wrong they are being subjected to.
These concepts can help the issue by just plain understanding them and the role women have been “given” in society. I have worked with very capable women in the military, some even more capable than a lot of men I worked with. I think if we understand these concepts, especially critical feminism, as I see that daily. There are traditional ways women are thought of as to follow and there are the new more modern versions of ways women could potentially and should be recognized for.
I find the second wave of feminism the most interesting as Delao (2021) states “Second wave feminism, from roughly the 1960s to the 1990s, encompassed far more issues such as pay equality, reproductive rights, female sexuality, and domestic violence. Like the first wave of feminism, many of these goals were achieved through legislation and important court decisions.”
This wave I feel was interesting because it encompassed a lot of hard issues and things were done through legislation. My own mom grew up during this time of feminism and I think of her as a strong and capable woman. The biggest issue I see in this wave, would have probably been the pay and domestic violence.
