Objectives
At the end of the module, the student:
2
Will identify how could the Nursing as Caring Theory can be appled to the nursing practice.
Will define the four mayor Componentes of Watson’s theory.
Will describe different theories focused on Culture.
Nursing is a form of human science which focuses on the knowledge needed to understand the fullness of wht it means to be human and, on the method, to verify this knowledge.
According to Watson, a theory is an imaginative grouping of knowledge, ideas, and experiences that are represented symbolically and seek to illuminate a given phenomenon.
It is merely necessary for the nursing staff to consider the proposals of the models and theories focused on caring and culture, for a better approach to the patient, and obtaining better results when implementing a care plan.

Theory of Human Caring of Jean Watson
Watson’s theory works to evolve nursing into more than just a task-oriented job through the caritas processes. Caritas processes developed from earlier work by Watson, which started as ‘carative factors . Caritas originates from Latin and refers to caring as something that must be sustained, is special and fragile. The caritas processes occur within the interaction between patient and the nurse and are the “tangible manifestation and embodiment of human caring" . The Ten Caritas Processes are listed below with a ‘real-shift example’. 1. Practice of loving kindness— Be kind to patients and coworkers alike. The practice of kindness (or lack of) will extend beyond the bedside. 2. Decision making—keep patients first in all decisions. 3. Instill faith and hope—Stay positive. Patients need you as a source of strength. 4. Practice teaching and learning that meets patient's needs and learning styles—involve family and visitors (that want to be involved) in patient education. 5. Nurture individual Spiritual beliefs and practices—Call a chaplain to speak with the patient who is clearly lonely 6. Holistic Care—Ensure care needs are all encompassing and will be met beyond the bedside. 7. Helping and Trusting relationship—if you promise to come back and check on something, keep that promise. Establish a caring presence with your patients. 8. Create a Healing environment—Keep noise down to allow patients to rest 9. Promote expression of negative and positive feelings—Pull up a chair, sit and listen to a patient that is clearly upset about something. Do the same for a coworker who is having a tough shift. 10. Miracles—Believe in them. Life is one and healing people can be one too.

Praxis Theory of Suffering
18
The Praxis Theory of Suffering consists of two major states, enduring and emotional suffering. When enduring the person suppresses emotional response to whatever is being suffered. They deliberately block thoughts of the event, and thereby block emotional responses. They maintain an immediate focus, blocking the past and the future, thus controlling thoughts of what the potential outcome of the event may mean. They focus on one step, one task at a time. This cognitive suppression reduces the emotional response, removes panic, and enables day-to-day functioning. However, the suppression requires constant vigilance and effort, and the process of suppressing the events and the motions may also suppress behavior, produce a flat affect, create a monotone voice, and loss of spontaneous movement, probably a lumbering gait. They speak in short sentences, in a monotone, barely moving their lips. They have an unfocused, gaze and little facial expression.
People who are enduring think they are coping well, even though they may make poor judgments (such as driving through red lights and stopping at the green). Others may stand away from them, avoid touching them, or just stand quietly or be with them.
Emotional suffering is a state in which the person recognizes that which is being suffered, and responds with weeping and distress. They have a hunched posture, a distraught expression, and cry and may talk incessantly about their suffering. Other are moved to comfort and support the person, including coming close and using touch.

Madeline Leininger stated that nurses must have knowledge about different cultural backgrounds and the diverse influences that impact them, with emphasis on the importance of performing a cultural assessment that would include recording of observations using all five senses: paying close attention and listening, identification of patterns and narratives, synthesis of themes and patterns, and development of a culturally congruent care plan jointly with the client.
According to Watson , the word nurse is both noun and verb. To her, nursing consists of “knowledge, thought, values, philosophy, commitment, and action, with some degree of passion” .Nurses are interested in understanding health, illness, and the human experience; promoting and restoring health; and preventing illness.
