One system of representation I see often in construction is the use of hard hats and safety vests. Besides being safety gear, they show a person’s role or rank on site. For example, a white hard hat usually means someone is a supervisor, while yellow might be a general laborer. These colors help people know who’s who, but they also show how power and roles are divided (Mumby, 2013). This connects to the critical approach because it shows how meaning and control can be shared through small things like clothing. It’s not always about what people say sometimes it’s about what they wear or how space is used on the job site (Mumby, 2013). At one job I was on, the company always used the phrase “We beat the schedule” like it was a big achievement. It became part of the culture, said in meetings, written on shirts, even joked about. It was meant to motivate, but it also pressured people to rush and work extra hours. That reminded me of what Deetz (1992) called corporate colonization, where company values start to take over how people think and act. Outside the company, that same phrase might seem like a red flag for unsafe work or burnout.
