Storage requirements are dictated by the type of product being stored and the type of operation (Mohamud et al., 2023). There are a few different types of storage that could be utilized depending on the requirements. Pallet racks, fixed position shelving, mobile shelving, automated storage and retrieval systems as well as temperature controlled storage are all examples of the various storage types. Each type has advantages and disadvantages depending on the organization and their specific operation. Pallet racks are a very common type of storage and can offer several different varieties to fit an organization’s requirements. Rollers can be installed in the racks to fulfill FIFO requirements. Mesh can be installed to ensure that bulky or unwieldy do not fall off and cause damage. The units can be adjusted to take advantage of horizontal and vertical space allowing for a large amount of inventory to be stored in a small footprint. Pallet racks also allow for the opportunity to create drive in or drive through racks that could increase storage space in limited areas, especially for large quantities of the same product. It does require installation which can be expensive depending on the variations or any required customization. Pallet racking also requires equipment like a fork lift or order picker to access goods. That equipment requires aisle space to operate in which could eat into the total square footage of storage space. It is not the most efficient solution for small or irregular shaped goods or products that are not palletized.
