I am going to write about a workplace that I used to be a part of. The culture and organization needed drastic improvement. In my opinion the biggest issue that I saw was maximizing work time. In the United States Navy, the mission is the priority. In Naval aviation, if the aircraft aren’t in prime operable condition, that means they need to be fixed. If they need to be fixed, that means we must work. Days, nights, overnights, weekends. The organization held no standard of care for the sailor’s personal time, despite being a few months from a long deployment. This effected communication within the organization because it removed a lack of trust from junior sailors to the leadership within the command. In addition to maximizing work time, employees asserted individual values over the values of the organization. While I do recognize that every person is an individual and will always bring their own values into play, in the military though, one must conform to the values of the organization as well. This played a role in communication due to a culture of individualism vice community. Information was being withheld by individuals and not being shared appropriately. Finally, the third “straw that broke the camels back” was the organizations approach to developing efficiency. Efficiency is great and is vital to an organization’s success, but this specific command was set in the “well this is the way we have always done it” mindset and refused to accept new and creative approaches to fix problems. This effected communication within the organization since no one was willing to share and express new ideas due to the mindset that their opinion is not valid.
This organization primarily used direct control. Direct control does work best for the United States military due to its subordinate-superior approach, as that ensures good order and discipline as well as ensuring mission accomplishment. However, I do think that if the military encouraged a more ideological control. If we gave more focus to the approach of getting the “buy-in” towards the mission, goals, values of the organization, I believe that we would be a more capable force.
