Quality Improvement Initiative
Your organization identified a trend in serious safety events related to medication administration. After launching a root cause or common cause analysis, the team discovered the root cause for the errors. At the direction of the chief nurse executive, the team is ready to create an action plan and begin a quality improvement initiative. What might this initiative entail? What is included? How will it assist in eliminating these errors?
The purpose of the Quality Improvement (QI) or Quality Assurance Performance Improvement (QAPI) Plan is to provide a formal ongoing process by which the organization and stakeholders use objective measures to monitor and evaluate the quality of clinical and operational services the healthcare setting provides to patients.
The organization’s QI Plan defines and facilitates a systematic approach to identify and pursue opportunities to improve services and resolve identified problems (Health Resources and Services Administration, 2011).
For this Discussion, review the Learning Resources. Then, reflect on how adverse events impact your organization and/or nursing practice. Consider the use of quality improvement initiative in the error rate, using scholarly articles to analyze.
To prepare:
• Review the Learning Resources for this week. Reflect on the types of quality improvement (QI) initiatives that might be most relevant to your healthcare organization or nursing practice.
• Review a scholarly article published within the last 5 years, which recounts a serious medical or patient care delivery error. Reflect on this error. Consider how it may potentially relate to your healthcare organization or nursing practice.
• Consider how adverse events are handled in your selected healthcare organization or clinical setting.
• Reflect on the potential impact to your organization including public reporting, financial penalties or reimbursement, or patient perceptions of the organization
Post a scholarly response to the following criteria:
• Review the selected scholarly journal article that recounts a serious patient safety or adverse health event.
• Evaluate the potential risks to patient care quality, safety, public reporting, and financial impact to the organization related to these types of events.
• Analyze the process your selected healthcare organization uses to manage these types of events.
• Describe the DNP nurse’s role in supporting and promoting these processes, continuous improvement, and learning.
