The clinician did a great job of engaging the client. He introduced himself, properly explained confidentiality and asked the client his preference of what to call him or address him as. There was also a great example of evoking within the interview. The clinician said, “how important would it be to you to make changes to your coke use”? By phrasing the question this way, they didn’t sound like they were giving advice but rather assessing their own motivation for change.

In the interview there was multiple examples of open-ended questions used to continue the discussion from the client and draw more details out of them surrounding their reasons for substance use. The clinician said, “can you tell me more, you’ve been partying, and your wife has been getting upset with you”. “Open-ended questions allow the client to explore aloud while the counselor provides encouragement and support” (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2020, pg. 146). The client then goes into detail and explains how his lack of employment has led him to party more and use cocaine. The open-ended question allowed the client to elaborate on specifics of what his problem is. After hearing the client describe everything, he has going on the clinician summaries back everything that the client stated to show he was listening attentively and understands what he is saying. “Summaries give the client a chance to hear his or her own words reflected back, thus prompting a response that leads to further exploration” (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2020, pg. 147).
