Utilization Of Nursing Research in Clinical Practice

Being a nurse practitioner student, the inclusion of the nursing research into the clinical practice has been the basis of my education and professional growth. The application of evidence-based practice (EBP) has enabled me to provide cost-effective and high-quality clinical care to patients that is safe and patient-centered, and has also enabled me to become a much more critical thinker and more capable of clinical judgment. As my experience in clinical rotations has demonstrated so far, nursing studies have some direct bearing on clinical judgments, guidelines, and patient care outcomes. This has taught me that it is always important to be informed on the new research trends and constantly review the evidence underpinning clinical practices.
Research in nursing has enabled me to use some of its findings in practice in one of the most influential interventions, i.e., evidence-based chronic disease management guidelines. As an example, when treating patients with type 2 diabetes, I used peer-reviewed materials and clinical practice recommendations offered by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) to make decisions concerning glucose and blood pressure targets and medical and lifestyle recommendations. Studies endorsed the application of more current antihyperglycemic drugs like the GLP-1 receptor agonist and the SGLT2 inhibitor not only to regulate glycemia but also as a cardiovascular and renal-protective agent (Davies et al., 2022). Having knowledge of the evidence to support these treatments, I was in a more rational position to support patients and worked with the supervising providers in personalizing care plans.
Additionally, I have used nursing research in the context of mental health screening. When I did my family practice rotation, I had a chance to meet numerous patients, who came with rather vague somatic complaints that turned out to be the symptoms of anxiety or depression. Based on research, I used validated screening instrument which include the PHQ-9 and GAD-7 questionnaires. The use of such tools which provided substantial evidence of sensitivity and specificity (Kroenke et al., 2001) enabled to make a more accurate evaluation and provided an opportunity to refer a patient to behavioral health services in time. It is possible that without nursing research, the proper use and the significance of such tools would have been neglected.
The other area in which nursing research has been extremely helpful is the addressing of health disparities and social determinants of health. As an example, the knowledge on how the socioeconomic status, race, access to care impact on health outcomes shaped my patient education and communication strategies. Literature has demonstrated that education provided by a patient based on familiarity with his/her level of literacy and culture may contribute much towards adherence and participation (Koh et al., 2012). Through the incorporation of this knowledge, I was able to constitute more significant education and establish better therapeutic associations.
Moreover, literature review and analysis of research articles has improved my knowledge of judging the quality of evidence. I got to know how to evaluate study design, sample size, bias, and their applicability to various populations. This was a critical skill when preceptors requested suggestions on treatments that they had not used or diagnostic equipment. I did not use personal experience or only the outdated practices of care, but I found quality evidence in reviewed journals, and the database of clinical materials CINAHL and PubMed.
In conclusion, as a student nurse practitioner, I have determined that the idea that nursing research is rather abstract and associated with the classroom is a theoretical concept, as it is an essential aspect of clinical practice. It empowers the providers to provide the care which is evidence-based, patient-centric, and ever-changable to the changing dynamic of care delivery. Going forward in my career as a professional, what I intend to do is to be an informed, research-literate practitioner who accepts practice-based evidence as the reshaping of the best practice.
