Background:
Pineda asks you into her office. She explains that she is working on a large project and needs you to complete a portion of it for her. Pineda is creating an educational program for advanced high school and college level students. Part of the curriculum focuses on relating current events to the historical development of the American political system as well as how cultural sensitivities and ethics influence public policy issues. Since you are new, she is letting you have a choice between two portions of the project. Pineda asks you to prepare a no more than 4-page (double-spaced) analysis of ONE of the following.
Pineda explains that writing analytical papers is a common task that you will perform regularly. It is essential that you understand what an analytical paper is and how to write one. An analytical paper examines and interprets elements of a topic, discussing the how and why and makes an argument or draws a conclusion. Support for your analysis with evidence and solid academic sources is essential to any analytical paper. For more details on how to write an analytical paper, please read: Summary vs. Analysis. You can also contact UMGC’s Writing Center or email your professor.
Since you are new at PolicyPulse, Pineda asks you to submit a rough draft of your paper so that she can help you to put your best work forward on your first major project. In order to provide you with the best feedback possible, all required elements of the final paper must be included in your rough draft.
Choose a current event involving the American government and discuss how the historical development of the American political system impacts your chosen current event.
Choose a current public policy issue and argue how cultural sensitivities and ethics are influencing your issue.
Pineda reminds you to support your analysis with credible references in APA style, and no more than 4 pages of double-spaced analysis. All papers should have a references page of all sources in APA style. PolicyPulse’s image relies upon both its bipartisanship as well as its scholarly reputation. It is essential that your analysis is properly cited in APA style, with in-text citations for all sources of factual information as well as any idea that is not your own.
Remember that all papers must contain an introductory paragraph which explains the topic and the argument the paper will make AND a concluding paragraph which wraps up the main points of the paper without introducing any new information.
Papers must use a minimum of 4 sources, including two primary sources and two academic journals. If you’re not sure about the difference between primary and secondary sources, check out the info at: Primary vs. Secondary Sources. All sources must be validated as solid, scholarly sources. Restrict your sources to newspaper articles from major national and international papers (use these sparingly as they tend to be biased and are not often written by experts in the field), published journals and magazine articles, and websites from major organizations and government agencies. Avoid using books, as you most likely won’t have time to read additional books with the load of reading in this course. Unless you read the entire book, you risk taking information out of context. Encyclopedias and textbooks may be referenced minimally in your paper, but do not count toward the minimum number of sources. APA style is required.
