I don’t think iHiker should have to pay the ransom. Yes, this might seem like it’s the fastest way to get their systems back, but the company has no guarantee the hackers will actually fix anything or undo their damage after getting the money. It’s entirely possible (and I’d personally say even likely) they could just take the $50,000 and leave everything still locked. On top of that, paying them would encourage more attacks in the future. That would show that companies will give in and they could get more money. Law enforcement should absolutely get involved and be told about this. It’s a serious cybercrime, and they have way more experience dealing with stuff like this. Reporting it also helps them track these hackers down and could stop other companies from being hit too. To prevent this from happening in the future, iHiker needs to step it up their cybersecurity department. That means doing not just things like backing up files regularly, using stronger passwords, and keeping systems updated, but also teaching employees how to spot sketchy emails, links, or anything else that could make the company vulnerable. It’d also be smart to get cyber insurance for extra protection. Having a plan in place ahead of time is way better than being caught off guard like this.
