Annotated Bibliography
13478Major news outlets can be reliable sources; however, Pineda recommends using government websites and library databases for credible, unbiased sources. The critical or analytical annotated bibliography helps you evaluate the credibility of each source and determine whether the source can help support your analysis. Each annotation should include the source in APA formatting, at the start, followed by one or two brief paragraphs that include the following information:
A brief summary of the source, including the main argument, main supporting points, research method and conclusions
An evaluation of the source, determining its credibility, value, bias, and reliability. When assessing a source consider the following: Author, date of publication, edition, publisher, type of journal, intended audience, object reasoning, coverage, and writing style.
A description of how the source contributes to your argument/thesis and how it affected your thinking on the topic
Note: Citations and quotes from the source should not be included in the annotation
Paper Topics:
Choose a current event involving the American government and discuss how the historical development of the American political system impacts your chosen current event.
Choose a current public policy issue and argue how cultural sensitivities and ethics are influencing your issue.
Instructions:
Write a critical or analytical annotated bibliography in APA style that includes sources that support your paper topic (you must use the same paper topic you used for your thesis statement in Step 1)
At least two academic and unbiased sources (one primary and one academic journal article)
Each annotation should start with a citation in APA formatting, followed by one to two brief paragraphs that includes:
a brief summary of the source, an evaluation of the source and a description of how the source contributes to your thesis/argument

Doe, a Professor of Political Science at the University of Knowledge, argues that Congress has ceded much of its war powers to the executive branch over the past century despite the War Powers Act of 1973. Doe uses several examples from the mid-late 20th century, including the Korean War and the Gulf War. He concludes that Congress can reassert its power to declare war by repealing outdated Authorizations for the use of Military Force (AUMFs)
Doe is successful in identifying how the power to declare war has evolved due to his focus on multiple case studies. His analysis critically views all perspectives and the motivations behind the evolution of the power to declare war. This source is valuable because it helps to prove my thesis statement that Congress willingly ceded its power to declare war. The article is in a peer-reviewed academic article and is current. While the research methods are reliable, the article fails to provide more recent case studies.
