DNP7100 – Evaluation of Evidence for Practice
The purpose of this paper is to explore the DNP journey and its impact to the profession while helping the student acclimatizing in the role of the Doctor of Nursing Practice Student. Furthermore, this assignment seeks to guide the student in the inquiring on their future role as DNP-graduate nurse and help prepare them for the journey and establish relationship with potential preceptor candidate.
This paper is a three-step process:
1) Reading the suggested articles to understand the DNP entrance to the program milestone and answer the students’ questions segment.
2) Interview a DNP-prepared nurse.
3) Complete a reflection and comparison of the student’s initial thoughts with the knowledge gained from the interview and share the experience in an open forum with classmates.

Exploring the DNP Journey
Initiating the journey to become a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is a fundamental milestone in the development of a professional nurse. This investigation aims to serve as guide to students through the initial stages of this challenging process, highlighting the essentials on the changeover into the program. By immersing students into suggested readings, it will ensure the obtention of a thorough insight into real expectations and challenges associated with this advanced level of education in nursing. In addition, this assignment also encourages students to reflect on future roles as DNP graduates encouraging a deeper analysis into their professional aspirations, expectations and responsibilities. An essential element of this passage is the establishment of relationships with potential future preceptors candidates, who will be playing a determinant role in modeling practical experiences and professional growth of students. During a three-step process structure, this investigation seeks to provide students with the key tools to navigate DNP journey successfully.
Section I- Student Questionnaire
1) After reading the proposed articles, how do you see the importance of having a DNP degree as the future leader of health care? Having a DNP degree is a essential tool for future healthcare leaders, as it provides the right set of skills, within the clinical setting, along with leadership capabilities and a greater deeper understanding of the healthcare policy and systems. Programs like this one prepare dedicate nurses to implement evidenced-based practice leading to healthcare innovations ensuring good patient outcomes. As healthcare challenges increase in complexity, having DNP prepared nurses is determinant in bridging the gap between research and practice assuring a healthcare delivery is effective and efficient. |
2) In your current workplace, is there any DNP-prepared nurse working? Any possible DNP-preceptor? Yes, in my current workplace there are several DNP-prepared nurses who serve as role models and mentors on my daily basis work. Their presence absolutely highlights the value of advanced practices in nursing and provides me with a great potential opportunity for a preceptorship during this DNP journey |
3) Do you have any fear/apprehensions regarding the DNP-student journey? As many others, I probable have some apprehensions in regards balancing time investment demands of then program with my professional responsibilities and my personal life; however, I am sure with the proper organization, time management and my family support I will be able to overcome this challenges and succeed. |
4) Who is your support system during this adventure? My support system includes primarily my family, they are an invaluable asset in my life. I am also lucky enough to receive support from my colleagues and academic mentors. Their encouragement and understanding are essential as I continue growing in the program. |
5) What are some opportunities you might consider or be interested in as a graduate student? I am interested in exploring avenues that will allow me to engage in research and healthcare policy development while implementing interdisciplinary collaboration in many projects. I would like to also explore teaching area as a unexplored skill, I will seek the opportunity to give back and implement the learning skills that I have gained |
6) How do you think your short-term and long-term career goals will impact your practicum and DNP scholarly project? My short-term goal would be developing expertise in an specific clinical area, for example since I am working in a pain management setting I would like to grow in this particular area, which will guide the focus of my DNP practicum project. In regards to long-term, I aim to serve as influence in healthcare policy which will shape the direction of my scholarly project, ensuring it addresses relevant and important issues in healthcare. |
Section II- Interview with DNP-prepared Nurse:
1) Why did you decide to enter the DNP journey? I decided to choose this path to enhance and my clinical expertise, assuming leadership roles was very appealing to me, and I wanted to contribute to the advancement of nursing practice while applying evidenced-based knowledge when caring for patients. |
2) How many years did you work as a registered nurse before deciding to go for your DNP? I practiced as a registered nurse for a few years before pursuing my DNP journey, I worked in ICU, ER, and then decided I wanted more and got into UM for my DNP. |
3) Did you have a support system? Yes, I had my family as my support system while taking care of my daughter, and it was very challenging at the time but it was very worth it. I had helped from some friends who I considered family today, and I also had wonderful mentors who inspired to became the professional I am today. |
4) Did you have any fear/apprehensions when you entered the DNP journey? Yes definitely, I Thought at some point it was too much, and I was not going to be able to manage the workload while at the same time taking care of my daughter and my family needs. |
5) What will you say was your greatest challenge during the DNP program? Having a balance between my academic responsibilities with my personal and professional commitments was the biggest obstacle; however with good planification, and support I was able to overcome those obstacles. |
6) Which suggestions will you provide to a student entering a DNP program? Be organized, Organization and planification are key to maintain the proper balance between your academical responsibilities and your personal life, including family, work, recreational time. |

I plan to implement time management and organizational strategies, while seeking mentorship to enhance my education experience and ensure a good impact on healthcare. I plan to develop strategies to reduce opioid use while improving pain management. |

Finally, the challenge into the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program is a transformative experience that can majorly impact students and ensure the growth of nursing as a profession.
