Assignment Overview
Description:
The purpose of this assignment is to provide students with the opportunity to apply a specific single-subject design to a research question and to gain experience graphing experimental data.
Process:
• Select one research question from the list below.
• Identify the independent and dependent variables (1-2 sentences).
• Select a multi-element/alternating treatment OR ABAC OR changing
• criterion design that would most appropriately answer the research question and explain why you have chosen this particular design. Include at least 1 citation of literature to substantiate your selection of the particular design to address the research question (1-5 sentences).
• Create a visual display of data (graph) using hypothetical data to demonstrate a functional relation. The graph must have at least 3 initial baseline data points and at least 10 intervention data points (total number of baseline and intervention data points will vary by graph type). To be considered an effective treatment, you must demonstrate effect or differentiation (depending on the design chosen).
Deliverable:
Compose a single page Word document containing the following:
• 1 paragraph indicating the independent and dependent variables, the experimental design selected, and the rationale for the selection of this particular design over others. Rationale for selection of design should be substantiated by one citation [steps 1 through 3 of the Process detailed above].
• 1 ABA formatted graph, using the selected experimental design, depicting a functional relation between the independent and dependent variable (note: at least 2 replications are required to demonstrate a functional relation). Construct your graph in Excel – and then insert the graph onto your Word document.
Scoring Criteria:
• Independent and dependent variables accurately identified (5 points)
• Experimental design is appropriate for the correctly identified research question (5 points)
• Lists and provides the rationale for selection of the research design over others is accurate and substantiated by at least one citation of relevant literature (5 points)
• Graph conforms to ABA Single Case Research Design formatting protocol (10 points)
• Visual display includes one clear demonstration of effect (functional relation) and differentiation between conditions (5 points)

7. Will self-monitoring incrementally decrease use of curse words at home for a 12-year old?
