Classroom Strategies to Build Relationships with Young Children with Challenging Behaviors
Children who live in environments with chronic stress have a high risk for delays in social and emotional development. With these delays may come challenging behaviors which disrupt learning or engagement in social interactions within the classroom.Children may also come from diverse cultural backgrounds in which expectations may different from the teacher’s background.Developing a positive adult/ child relationship and connection will be even more important to help the young child learn appropriate behaviors in class, learn with and from peers and set them up for success in their future schooling years.Price and Steed (2016) highlight five culturally responsive strategies to help educators develop positive relationships with young children in a pre-school setting.
Learn about the children and their families through conversation and inviting them to participate in classroom activities or through home visits.
Develop classroom expectations together with young children to help them understand and follow these expectations.Expectations will also need to be taught, frequently modelled by adults and appropriate behaviors recognized in children.Genuine recognition will help the child understand the expectations, provide models of success for other children and reinforce the child for making good choices.
Teach empathetic behavior by modelling warmly and timely responses to children’s needs as well as using games, pictures books and music to highlight values like respect, kindness, responsibility, compassion.
Teach children perspective taking by using I-statements to reframe a child’s behavior in a positive light. For example: “Bill, I see that you are really excited to be going outside to play. Thank you for pushing your chair in under the table. Please remember to use your walking feet when you are inside.”
Discuss conflicts and how they can be resolved in group time.
The quality of nurturing relationships affects an early childhood age child significantly, however, research has provided evidence that the influence of quality of relationships on development continues throughout lifetime.A child can also benefit from secure relationships with multiple caregivers (both inside and outside of the family) while still having primary attachments to parents. Although multiple caregivers can be beneficial in the life of a child, it is important that these relationships be stable and predictable. High caregiver turnover is disruptive(National Scientific Council on the Development, 2004).
The quality and stability of relationships experienced by children lay the foundation for later development in:
mental health
motivation to learn
achievement in school and in adult life
emotional self-regulation of aggression
non-violent resolution of conflicts
moral development (knowing right from wrong)
maintaining friendships
potential parenting skills
