FINAL PROJECT
Choose one of the three options listed below as your final project:
· OPTION 1: Evaluating the accessibility of a public facility or
· OPTION 2: Interviewing the parent/guardian or teacher of an individual with a disability or
· OPTION 3: Interviewing an employee in an agency that addresses the post-secondary needs of individuals with disabilities
Regardless which option you select, each option consists of part A and part B.
OPTION 1: Evaluating the Accessibility of a Public Facility :
Final Project, Part A (Maximum of 50 points)
The purpose of this assignment option is to evaluate the accessibility of a public facility according to ADA guidelines. To complete this assignment, you will need to:
· Identify one facility that houses a public business or service and provide basic information about the facility (what it is, whom it serves, and where it is located). Evaluate the accessibility of this facility to individuals with disability (e.g., a building on VSU’s campus, a local restaurant, grocery store, mall, library, etc.).
· Use the ADA Checklist at http://www.adachecklist.org/doc/fullchecklist/ada-checklist.pdf or word version ADA Checklist word fillable form.docx as your data collection instrument and to help you evaluate the facility you chose for this assignment. Make sure that you study the checklist carefully prior to visiting the facility and that you know how to use the checklist and what tools and resources (e.g., tape measure, phone camera) you will need to assemble in order to be able to conduct your assessment and collect data (e.g., photographs, notes with specific measurements, and accessibility brochures or any other materials available in the building). Make sure to address the four priority areas on the checklist, taking measurements where indicated and taking photos in evidence of each priority area:
Priority 1 – Accessible approach and entrance
Priority 2 – Access to goods and services
Priority 3 – Access to public toilet rooms
Priority 4 – Access to other items such as water fountains and public telephones
You will be required to submit your completed checklist and the accompanying evidence (i.e., documentation) into the assignment box. A word document version of the ADA checklist has been provided for your convenience.
· For any areas that do not meet the accessibility standards, identify the possible solution(s) and record them on the checklist.
· Submit into Assignment box your completed checklist and attach all pieces of evidence (i.e., photographs, notes with specific measurements, accessibility brochures or any other materials available in the building), and your reflection (Part B). Number and label your photographs as directed in the instructions for use of the ADA Checklist. Note that you will need to compress your photos before submission in order to be able to upload them into the Assignment box . Make sure to provide on the checklist your name and the date you completed the assessment in addition to the information about your facility.

Final Project, Part B. Reflection (Maximum of 50 points)
In this part of the final project, you will assemble and read the reading materials (references) to build and activate your background knowledge on the topic of accessibility and disability and you will also write a reflection paper.
Background Information Reading
In preparation for writing your reflection, find and review carefully three reading materials (references) that provide a reliable definition of accessibility and information about the laws governing accessibility (including Section 504 of the Rehabilitation, The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Your reading materials should also explain the benefits of accessibility for individuals with disabilities and without disabilities (consider Universal Design). The reading materials (references) could be journal articles, book chapters, and websites that are written and published by subject matter experts and that are sponsored by the leading professional organizations in the field of disability and disability studies (Wikipedia entries are not acceptable). Your reading materials (references) should include both journal articles and/or book chapters for a total of two , and one website only . You will be required to reference these reading materials in your reflection paper.
Reflection Paper
Write a four page, double-spaced, including references, reflection paper that:
(1) provides a definition of accessibility and discusses the laws governing accessibility [(including, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation, The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)] based on the information obtained from your reading materials (references) and also explains the benefits of accessibility for individuals with disabilities and without disabilities (consider Universal Design).
(2) analyzes the data from the evaluation of a public facility using the ADA Checklist and provides specific examples from the ADA Checklist in support of analysis.
(3) proposes solutions/improvements for any areas in the facility that do not meet the accessibility standards and provides a rationale for each area in need of improvement.
(4) discusses what you learned and the ways in which you were impacted (positively and/or negatively) as a result of this assignment. A minimum of six different ways in which you were impacted (positively and/or negatively) should be discussed. You are also required to connect your learning to the information you gleaned from the reading materials (references) and the data you obtained using the ADA Checklist. In other words, provide detailed examples from the ADA Checklist and make specific references to the reading materials that provide background information on the topic under discussion. Use these questions to structure your discussion of what you have learned:
· What did I learn?
· How did it change my thinking about the topic of accessibility for individuals with disabilities?
· In what ways ( six different ways) have I been impacted (positively and/or negatively)?
· How have the reading materials (references) informed and/or deepened what I have learned?
Your reflection paper should follow APA style when you enclose the citations and make references to the reading materials in your text, and it should be free of spelling and grammatical errors.

OPTION 2: Interviewing the Parent/Guardian or Teacher of an Individual with a Disability
Final Project, Part A (Maximum of 50 points)
The purpose of this assignment option is to learn about instructional and behavioral supports, as well as collaborative and inclusive strategies and efforts for an individual with a disability, from either the parent’s/guardian’s or teacher’s perspective. To complete this assignment, you will need to:
· Develop a script for the interview. Your interview script should have a minimum of 12 questions. Use a potential question pool provided by the professor to start generating your interview questions and develop the rest of questions on your own.
· Identify the person you will be interviewing and establish his/her relationship to the individual with a disability. Identify a disability that the person you are interviewing has had an experience with and indicate the date you plan to complete the interview.
· Obtain a written permission for the interview. Use the permission form provided by professor. You will be required to submit the signed permission form as part of the interview documentation.
· After you have obtained the permission, conduct the interview using the interview script that you have developed. You should ask follow-up questions that were not included on the original script during the interview; these questions and the interviewee’s responses should be added to the final write-up/transcript of the interview.
· Audio-record your interview, including the questions that you have asked and the interviewee’s responses to these questions.
· Transcribe your interview. That is, write up the whole interview verbatim (word for word), including the questions that you have asked and the interviewee’s entire responses to your questions.
· Submit to Assignment box: a) your interview transcript, b) a signed written permission form by the interviewee, and c) reflection (Part B)

OPTION 3: Interviewing an Employee in an Agency that Addresses the Post-Secondary Needs of Individuals with Disabilities
Final Project, Part A (Maximum of 50 points)
The purpose of this assignment option is to learn about the options available to the individuals with disabilities when they leave the public school system and move into post-secondary education or the world of work. You may consider interviewing a counselor in the Department of Labor Rehabilitation, a VSU Access Office employee, a teacher of an individual with a disability in post-secondary setting. To complete this assignment, you will need to:
· Develop a script for the interview. Your interview script should have a minimum of 12 questions. Use a potential question pool provided by the professor to start generating your interview questions and develop the rest of questions on your own.
