Reflect
During this class, you’ve learned the value of taking time when examining works of art, the concept of art movements, and the elements that art historians consider when analyzing artworks. As you’ve learned, art historians consider the elements of design, such as color and perspective, as well as the principles of design, such as balance and rhythm. In addition, art historians think about the factors that shaped the artwork, such as the historical or social context, and about the symbolism and iconography in an artwork. All these factors, which you can review in Sections 5.1–5.4 in the textbook, come together when an art historian discusses and analyzes an artwork.
Take a few minutes to reflect on what you’ve learned about movements and about analyzing artworks. Consider what movement or artwork you might like to learn more about. In this assignment, you will analyze an artwork of your choice. In your textbook, review Section 4.5.2, Stylistic Periods or Movements, and Sections 5.1–5.4 on elements of design, and go through the Art Identifying MovementsLinks to an external site. interactive, examining the different movements.

Identify the title of the work, the name of the artist, the date of the work, and the place it was created (if known).
Identify the movement that the artwork is associated with and the elements of the artwork that helped you identify the movement.
Discuss at least two elements of design that you observed in the artwork, explaining how the artist used them in the artwork.
Discuss at least two principles of design in the artwork, explaining how the artist used them in the artwork.
Discuss at least one contextual factor that is reflected in the artwork, making sure to explain how the contextual factor connects the artwork to the world that existed when it was created.
Discuss at least one example of the use of symbolism or iconography in the artwork; or, if there is no symbolism or iconography in the artwork, explain how that absence is connected to the characteristics of the movement or the artist’s personal style.
Include an image of the artwork in an appendix at the end of your paper.
