Analyzing the Socio-Psychological Foundations of Conformit
Analyze the socio-psychological factors that influence our tendency to conform to group pressure. In your analysis, address each of the following rubric criteria in 3 to 5 sentences:1. Describe the difference between acceptance, compliance, and obedience, and provide examples of how these concepts present within the group dynamic. Acceptance, compliance and obedience are similar yet different in nature. Acceptance and compliance are two variations of conformity where obedience is doing something because it is required (Myers, 2021-10-12). For example, seatbelts in vehicles. Acceptance is when you believe in something, so you accepting that seatbelts save lives. Compliance would be following that we need to wear them whereas, if we didn’t think they saved lives yet, we wore them because the law said so, we are in obedience. 2. Describe the difference between normative influence and informational influence and provide examples of how these concepts impact the group dynamic. Normative and informational influences are two possibilities that explain why individuals may conform to a certain way. These were named by Mortaon Deutsch and Harold Gerard in 1955 (Myers, 2021). One comes from our desire to be liked the other is our desire to be right. Normative is “going along with something” to gain approval or not be rejected from the group or individual. An example would be cheering for a football team because everyone else is, when in fact, you are rooting for the other team. Informational is referring to data or other information used to make a decision that one feels is trustworthy. A person will base their beliefs on this information. Example of informational influence would be medication given to you by your physician. You take it and trust the physician because you feel he knows what is best. 3. Describe why cognitive dissonance is not always easy to recognize in ourselves.Cognitive dissonance is that internally nagging feeling we get, that gut feeling, when something isn’t right. Because it’s internal, we don’t always recognize what it is or how to change it. (Cherry, 2025). We need and want consistency in our thought patten so we can show some mood changes when it’s not. It’s hard to recognize because it may not had formed just yet therefore hard to determine or we justify our behavior (Myers, 2021) 4. Describe ways to reduce cognitive dissonance and shift to a state of cognitive consonance in the group setting. To reduce cognitive dissonance and promote cognitive consonance in a group setting, you start with yourself. Educating yourself and learning new information can help with discerning the difference in what we hear for it not to be deciding our actions. If we’re able to recognize how the group will affect us cognitively, it will help with the actions that are less undesirable. By doing so we can take responsibility for our actions and part in the group.
