The history of labor and class is the topic I have chosen, however, I am concentrating on the class and labor of women throughout history. It delves further into how women are discriminated against in both the workplace and in class. In the workplace, women weren't seen as equals. These statements—"Women belong in the kitchen" or "Women are meant to be seen and not heard"—have probably been heard before. Low pay, gender discrimination, a lack of flexible work options, safety concerns, limited job advancement, and limited benefits (including healthcare) were among the class and labor issues that women faced. I could continue.
Here are some historical events that women have accomplished. All information is from the article Fifty Years of Women's Labor History from NEA Today. "50 years ago, pregnant teachers were commonly forced out of their classrooms as soon as they looked pregnant." The NEA helped file a lawsuit that made its way to the Supreme Court. Another event was "the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) declares sexual harassment a violation of Title VII and establishes guidelines that define it as 'unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature.” (Flannery, 2023)
This is a subject that affects all women. The 1977 International Women's Year (IWY) Oral History Collection has a webpage. This collection includes interviews that provide firsthand reports of the National Women's Conference in Houston, Texas. It covers topics that affected women in the 1970s in the US, including healthcare, work, reproductive rights, and the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). Both I and a former coworker resigned from our positions. In the sense that my female boss micromanaged other female employees and continues to do so. For those who are unfamiliar with the term, micromanagement is the practice of a manager closely monitoring and controlling the work of their staff. It is typified by an overemphasis on little details, which can undermine worker creativity and motivation. In my coworker's situation, this female boss went to the higher up and told him false information, and he expressed to my previous coworker that he had lost trust in her.

Working on this project has helped me see how layered Hispanic and Latinx identity really is. One thing that stood out was how much meaning is packed into terms like Hispanic, Latino, and Latinx. These aren’t just labels they reflect history, politics, and personal identity (Benson, 2024). I also didn’t realize that Latinx people weren’t even properly recognized in the U.S. census until the 1970s, and only after major advocacy efforts. That showed me how hard our communities have had to fight just to be seen.
The stories of figures like Malinche and Sor Juana really stuck with me too. For so long, they were seen as traitors or troublemakers, but now we’re starting to understand their stories with more depth and respect (Gaspar de Alba, 2014).
Growing up in a Hispanic household, I saw firsthand how traditional gender roles shaped everything. My dad worked multiple jobs while my mom and grandma ran the house. My brother was praised for the smallest things, while I was criticized for not doing things perfectly. That experience helped me relate to others who feel boxed in by cultural expectations.
This project helped me connect the dots between my personal experiences and larger historical patterns. It made me think about how I want to raise my kids with more freedom to be themselves, and without the pressure to fit outdated roles.
