The development of auto-driven, battery-powered trucks by AssimT, Inc. is a big step in technology, but it also raises concerns about job loss. While automation makes things more efficient and cost-effective, it also puts long-distance truckers out of work, which is a major issue. It’s a tough situation because progress is important, but so are the people affected by it.
The moral dilemma for AssimT is deciding whether making a profit is more important than the impact on workers. While they aren’t responsible for keeping jobs around forever, they do have some responsibility to consider what happens to the people their technology replaces. Offering retraining programs or other job opportunities might help balance things out.
If I were the inventor, I’d have a hard time knowing that my invention, even if successful, could leave thousands of people without jobs. This connects to Kohlberg’s moral development stages, especially the post-conventional level, which focuses on ethics and fairness. The ethical climate of caring would probably matter most to me because it focuses on the impact on people rather than just profits.
This situation relates to my values since I think businesses should try to be responsible for their impact. If I worked for a company that only cared about making money and ignored the harm they caused, I wouldn’t want to stay there. It would be hard to work for a company that doesn’t at least try to do the right thing.
