Unit 5 discussion response_MT304

The very real concept of self-driving, battery-powered trucks presents both technological advancements and ethical concerns. While this innovation will likely improve efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and lower operational costs after the initial overhead, it also threatens the livelihoods of long-distance truck drivers.
AssimT, Inc. faces a classic ethical dilemma: balancing innovation with social responsibility. The company has a duty to shareholders and consumers to develop cost-effective, sustainable solutions to create a better future for the company. However, it must consider the impact of eliminating thousands of positions, and more so the workers who fill them and who rely on trucking for their livelihood. We also have to add in the fact that truck driving is a very common career path.
If I were the inventor, I would feel a moral obligation to address the consequences of my innovation. I would advocate for retraining programs, industry partnerships for job transitions, and possibly phased implementation to allow affected workers time to adapt. This aligns with Level 3 (Postconventional Morality) of Kohlberg’s moral development model, particularly Stage 5 (Social Contract Orientation), where ethical decisions consider society’s broader well-being. If we eliminate 10,000 truck driving positions over a 3 month period, but at the same time we set them up for a different career field then the moral concern becomes lesser. If I take food from my daughter, but immediately hand her a different plate of food you could argue I was immoral but also conducted a moral act by correcting the original immoral act.
The three ethical climates in the text (Caring, Rules, and Instrumental) suggest different approaches. I would prioritize a caring climate, ensuring that business decisions weigh the well-being of employees and stakeholders rather than solely focusing on profit. Just like in the military, when bad things happen in our organizations, we try to correct the issue, but ultimately, it’s bad for business if we just don’t care. People will stop trusting the organization if it shows it doesn’t care.
This scenario relates to my personal value of responsibility. I believe there is an “ought” that should be done, the great philosopher Kant expresses there is a universal right, and we ought to conduct ourselves in a manner to live in that universal right.
There have been instances where my values did not align with an organization’s—particularly in cases where leadership emphasized short-term financial gain at the cost of employee well-being. A key personal value that would prevent me from working at a company is integrity. If a company knowingly disregards ethical concerns or social responsibility, it would be difficult for me to contribute meaningfully to its mission.
