Company and Situation

I chose Microsoft because before my purchase of one of their devices, I had conducted research on where and how they produced their products. Microsoft was founded in 1975 and is a worldwide leader in producing software for personal computers (Redmond, 1996). Between the years 1975 and 1966, the company was solely releasing multiple Microsoft window versions. The biggest issue Microsoft faced in the early stages of development was the hardships of being an underdeveloped company compared to major competitors.

Purpose of Outsourcing

Microsoft wanted to maximize its computing resources, make investments in its brand, and focus on providing the best product to consumers. This shaped the decision to outsource contracts with Vanstar Corporation and ENTEX Information Services Incorporated in the year of 1996. Vanstar Corporation offered the Microsoft life cycle management approach to networking services, covering key phases of the process, analysis, design, planning, implementation, support, monitoring, and maintenance (Redmond, 1996). Outsourcing to Vanstar offered Microsoft a sufficient procurement system that tracked the required tools, tracking, and analyzing. Microsoft also outsourced to ENTEX, where this company provided standard and generic network support. ENTEX is a leading PC system integrator and provider of desktop services that keeps in-house strategic skills that support Microsoft’s emerging technology advancements (Redmond, 1996). The purpose behind this decision to outsource was to provide multiple providers tailored to their customers’ needs across the world. Microsoft was only interested in outsourcing to companies that could provide multiple benefits and reach the vision of excellence.

Results of Decision

I believe Microsoft made the right decision to outsource because they not only increased the company’s overall profits but were able to stun the world of technology by continuously adapting to the technology industry. This led to major success by providing 24/7 support internationally and providing what other competitors could not. Microsoft is the world leader in software development and continues to dominate over competitors such as Apple and Google. Microsoft continues to create innovation, provide strong leadership, vision, trust in employees, and resiliency (Mcfarlane, 2024). The leadership behind Microsoft was aware of the potential risk of outsourcing but have successfully overcome the obstacles and remain as the world’s largest advanced software maker.
