Critical Thinking & Application Prompts
You will be directed to the applicable set of prompts by clicking the “Take the Quiz” button below. Prior to starting this assignment, be sure you have carefully reviewed all of the content referenced on the Learning Materials page (and any other pages associated with the module).
Each prompt is generally worthy of at least 250 words (2 – 3 well-written paragraphs) in response. Be sure to connect with (and informally cite in-text) the applicable readings / videos from the module’s learning materials.
A note on in-text citing and connecting with the learning materials: As a graduate student in a Master of Science degree program, it’s very important that you offer perspectives and arguments that are grounded in theory and the scientific literature – NOT personal opinion or anecdotal evidence. I don’t want a works-cited page, but I do want you to clearly cite your sources in-text for the various connections you’ll be making between the learning materials and your application thereof. For example, one might write, “While I marveled at the uncanny ability of the psychic to tap into my true personality, the Barnum Effect (Aronson, Chapter 2) could have well explained my feelings…” Be sure to use these informal in-text citations to make your arguments and support your perspectives.
ProTip: You may want to copy the essay questions into a Word doc (or similar), and compose your responses to the worksheet prompts offline. Then you can return to the quiz submission page to “copy and paste” your previously composed responses into the text box associated with each of the prompts. Once you have done that, you can click the “Submit the Quiz” button near the bottom of the screen in order to submit your essay questions for grading. The Critical Thinking & Application essay-based quizzes are set to “single attempt” which means you cannot return to the quiz page to make revisions – so please keep that in mind and only “submit” your quiz when you are satisfied with your work!

Module Five Critical Thinking & Application Prompts
PLEASE FIND INFORMATION FOR THESE QUESTIONS IN THIS BOOK: Below is an outline for a curriculum designed to help leaders develop effective strategies for handling angry and confrontational individuals. This curriculum integrates insights from Elliot Aronson’s The Social Animal (12th Edition) with additional scientifically supported research on conflict resolution, emotional regulation, and communication. I AM UNABLE TO DOWNLOAD THE BOOK FROM THE CLASS FOR THIS LESSON. SO GET AS MUCH INFORMATION AS YOU CAN FROM ONLINE SOURCES SPECIFICALLY OUT OF THIS BOOK AND THIS ONE: Influence: Science And Practice, 5th Edition By: Robert Cialdini
Aronson, E. (2018). The Social Animal (12th ed.). New York, NY: Worth Publishers.
(Four Prompts) Prompt 1: Understanding how to deal effectively with angry and confrontational people is an aspect of leadership that is incredibly useful in a wide variety of domains and circumstances. Given that these kinds of situations may be few and far between (ideally), students of leadership rarely get a chance to reflect on (and practice) these skills. Drawing on this module’s learning materials (and any other scientifically supported content you can find on the internet), sketch out an outline for some curriculum that you believe would be effective in this regard. What would be your specific learning objectives? What topics would be featured in your curriculum? What might be some resources / tools you would use? What kinds of activities would be part of the course? (Be sure to make connections to the learning materials, and cite your sources.) Prompt 2: Based on your results with the Emotional Intelligence self-assessment, what would you consider to be your strengths and weaknesses with respect to emotional intelligence? Discuss the concept with a loved one, friend, or trusted colleague. What are their perceptions with respect to your self-appraisal? Based on your EI readings and self-assessment results, what steps might you take to become even more emotionally intelligent? Prompt 3: Is everyone prejudiced to one degree or another? That is, is it possible to be entirely free of prejudice in our society? Why or why not? How could people become more aware of the subtle ways in which they hold or express prejudiced beliefs and behavior? Describe any experiences you might have had in which you suddenly realized you were acting or feeling prejudiced toward another person or group. Were you surprised to discover this about yourself? Prompt 4: How might you use your knowledge of leadership theories (such as transactional leadership theories, transformational leadership theories, contingency theories of leadership, etc.) to become a more effective organizational leader? Consider these leadership theories from a social psychological point of view. Make some connections between what you have been learning about social psychology and one (or more) of the various leadership theories discussed in this module. How does your knowledge of social psychology help you understand these leadership theories more deeply? What might a social psychologist’s perspective (and possible critiques) be regarding the leadership theories scholarship?
