Module 5: Annotated Bibliography
Organizational Leadership, Leadership Studies, etc., is a fairly young field of study. This is to your benefit though, for two reasons. First, you get to help shape the field. I never tire of reminding graduate students that the shift to graduate-level work is one from being a knowledge consumer to a knowledge producer. Second, while there is plenty of literature out there, it is not overwhelming.
As you think about your problem, your site, or the theory you’re investigating further, this assignment is an opportunity for you to demonstrate that you have synthesized what other scholars have said about the topic that interests you. Lots of people have done all sorts of research, tested different theories, and examined many different contexts. What have we found out? Is there anything that is especially useful for you to know or challenges your preconceptions or conventional wisdom? What is the “state of the art”?
This assignment helps prepare you to complete the last assignments in this course as well as giving you a chance to write a literature review later in the program. Annotated bibliographies form the backbone of a literature reviews by showing that you have read and understood key research and can form arguments by locating your ideas in a body of scholarship.
In this assignment, you will:
1. Summarize the topic or question in 50 words or less: This can be a theory, concept, or problem that your annotated bibliography elucidates. This will be the topic that you will pursue later in this course for the final assignments (and perhaps you will continue to consider this topic throughout your graduate study).
2. Create an annotated bibliography of at least eight sources. These sources must be new to you and NOT from your Theory Matrix. Also, only two of these sources may be older than 2015; most should be from the last decade. Each entry must include the following information for each of the sources:
· Reference to the article (using the APA citation format)
· keywords
· type of research
· research questions or hypotheses
· summary of the article
· contribution to understanding your topic.
To effectively write this annotated bibliography, obviously, you’ll need to read each of the articles. Simply repeating published abstracts will not be sufficient.
