Decode the speech bubbles on each page of the book Mr. Wuffles. After decoding the entire book, complete the reflection questions. There isn't a word count or page number requirement for the reflection. The questions just need to be answered completely and thoroughly. I have included the PDF for the book in the word document as well as a video of my professor further explaining the assignment. You only have to complete part 1 & 2 of the assignment.

READ 3231 Mr. Wuffles Project
This project is designed to allow you to develop the following professional skills:
· Identify strategies for speaking and listening skills
· Develop an understanding of new languages
· Create a literacy rich learning environment for diverse learners
· Foster student inquiry
There are multiple components related to this assignment, so you will want to work on this assignment over time. You can begin by exploring the David Wiesner picture book Mr. Wuffles!
You will submit each component to the appropriate drop box in Folio.
The assignment is worth 50 points.
1) Breaking the Code
a) After exploring the book, you probably noticed that it is written in an alien language. This should give you an understanding of what it means to learn a new language. I want you to get a sense of the complexities students experience in an English-only classroom. Your job is to try and decode this alien language just as immigrant students try and decode English in their new classrooms.
b) Create a list (by page & speech bubble) that you think represents the symbols (like a non-alphabetic language) in the book with a corresponding to each speech bubble. To do this, you will need to study the images, and try to decipher the meaning of the story. As you make guesses about the “words”, you will begin to fill out your list.
c) Submit a copy of your code breaking skills in the correct Dropbox.
2) Telling the Story
a) In a document, answer the following questions about your experience. Submit a copy in the correct Dropbox.
i) How was the experience for you?
ii) What clues really helped you as a reader or storyteller?
iii) What clues were missing that would have been helpful?
iv) How do you think your background experiences as a language user impacted your understanding of the storyline?
v) How will this experience impact you as you teach English learners in your future classroom?
3) Inquiry Based Learning Plan (IND)
a) In this section you will plan for an inquiry-based approach to Mr. Wuffles. After reading the book with students, you want to provide opportunities for students to pursue their own questions that arose from the text. Be sure you have read the Ness article (When Readers Ask Questions: Inquiry-Based Reading Instruction) prior to completing this portion of the assignment. This article is posted in Folio.
b) Create a list of questions that you think students will have after a reading experience with Mr. Wuffles. Focus on a particular grade level K-5th grade. You should have a minimum of five questions.
i) Examples: Why do cats have sharp claws? Are aliens real?
c) Identify resources that you would need to provide for students to investigate their questions. These should include paper-based books, websites, videos, blogs, images, songs, puppets, fingerplays, etc. The materials should be appropriate for the selected grade level and be related to the inquiry questions. There should be a minimum of 10 resources.
d) Develop a way for students to share the information they learned from their individual inquiries. Explain your activity in detail. This may be formal or informal. It may or may not include technology. However, it should be age appropriate.
4) Instructional Strategy Lesson Plan (IND)
a) For the lesson plan, you will focus on either listening or speaking for the selected grade level.
b) Start by reviewing the Georgia Standards of Excellence for listening and speaking in the appropriate grade level. Select the standard you wish to teach.
c) Write an objective based on the standard you chose.
d) Investigate research-based strategies for teaching speaking and listening skills. You can begin with the strategies you’ve learned in class and then follow up with additional research. Choose 1 meaningful and appropriate strategy to implement with Mr. Wuffles. Design an activity that goes with the book to teach the strategy. You must include some type of collaboration among students as part of your activity. Take the time to be creative and think outside the box. Be sure you take into account diverse learners (special needs, multiple languages, struggling readers/writers, student backgrounds, etc.).
e) List the procedures for teaching the strategy with students (activity).
f) Below is the format you should use for writing this portion of the assignment.

A. Grade Level:
B. Standard:
C. Objective:
D. Listening or Speaking Strategy:
E. Procedures for Teaching the Strategy/Activity (Include details. Be specific.)
