“Despite the rapid proliferation of the internet across the globe, over 2.5 billion people still lack access to it. Nearly a third of the world’s population cannot take advantage of online services that are essential in today’s digital world such as finance and banking, education and healthcare” (WE Forum).

With respect to the to the digital divide in the US the main focus appears to be targeted to specific groups based on social and economic gaps. However, when viewing the data from “Pew Research Center reports indicate that 10% of adults did not use the internet in 2019, down from 48% in 2000” (CRS Reports). In consideration to the decline from the years 2000 to 2019 the largest disparity appears to be within the age groups with 50-64 12% 65+ 27%. While limited access to technology has a significant impact on the digital exclusion of older adults, ageism correspondingly effects elderly technology adoption.

From a professional perspective I’ve notice the lack of technological savvy with older adults and or senior groups at work. My current employer has moved forward with digital service and utilizing AI technology in addition to online services for assisting members however what I noticed most amongst our senior population is that there is constant frustration due to the inability to complete simple task including but not limited to uploading documents and sending emails.

When dealing with the digital divide I believe that proper education is necessary in efforts to close the gap however percentages may decline overtime with new members entering the older adult population.
