Personal Mission Statement Part 2 / Self-Analysis/1st Draft of Statement
In this portion of the assignment, you will have to do a self-analysis by considering how your personal brand is exhibited across all digital platforms and with your inter-personal relationships. You will also be asked to dig deep to discover your values and overall purpose. Once you complete this analysis, then you can create your first draft of your mission statement.
Format: Word Document Template (Use template provided by professor)
These are the portions that must be filled out:
3 Adjectives: All decisions that are made about you and your career are done when you are not in the room. It is, therefore, very important to have a clear understanding of what you want the decision makers to remember about you. The easiest way to do this is to select 3 adjectives that people will recall when thinking about you or describing you to others. You also have to explain why you selected these words and how you plan on representing them in your day-to-day actions.
Example: Ethical, Determined, Gregarious
Identify what motivates you: Find your purpose by identifying your interests, passions and desires. This is pivotal in order to develop your mission statement. Without a goal and/or purpose, you cannot have a mission. At times, this can be the most challenging part of the exercise. Remember that we each have distinct gifts and talents. Have confidence in that, and it will help you find your purpose.
Analyze your digital presence: Take an inventory of your professional and personal social media accounts and analyze against your attributes and motivations. Make sure they are aligned. Your presence online should support your personality and interests always. In this section explain how your sites either live up to your brand/adjectives/purpose or if they need help. Include any next steps you plan on taking with your platforms to enhance/improve/align your digital presence. Please note you will not be expected to make those changes for purposes of this assignment, rather identify them.
Draft Mission Statement: After doing the exercises above, write your first draft. The mission statement is one sentence that can answer the “who”, “what”, “how” and “why” questions. (Guidance provided below). Share your statement with peers, family and/or friends to get their honest feedback.
Guidance & Ideas
A Personal Mission Statement is exactly what the title says, “personal”. This is an introspective exercise that should represent the real you. The more authentic, the more effective it will be.
Also, keep in mind that your statement is ever-evolving therefore, it can and should be updated throughout your career. Your attributes, interests, and goals will likely change throughout your life therefore, your mission statement will vary as well.
There are many different ways of landing on the right statement. One of the best exercises is that the sentence should answer the following questions in its structure:
What is it that you want to do?
Why do you want to do it?
How will you do it?
Who will you do it for?
By answering the “who, what how, why” questions, the statement will be more concise.
Focus on something that is a core value. What is important to you and how you will contribute to the world. This is the “why” of what you do and can even incorporate the “how” of your mission. (Cross reference with adjectives and what motivates you)
What are your strengths as far as what you can contribute to a business or society? This is where you focus on the “what” of your statement. Make sure to incorporate something that you are really good at. (Reference with self-assessment & strengths)
Many statements forget to mention the target of the mission which is also an extremely important factor and should not be limited to just yourself. While your mission may be intended to make you successful, that should be the result, not the actual mission. Make sure to incorporate the “who” which is the target of your mission which can be a group of people or can even refer to a business/entity.
One very important step is inspiration. Mission statements are effective when they encourage others to “join your cause” and in many cases are the result of you being motivated by others. We are, by our very nature, social beings and not only require social interaction for positive mental health, but we also are heavily influenced by each other – in both positive and negative ways. Great mission statements are almost infectious in that they can change people’s behavior and thinking. As you develop your personal mission, think about who/what has inspired you in your life and how you wish to inspire others throughout your career.
