Case Study:
Nayely is a nurse practitioner who has just begun working in Dr. Tran’s small family medical practice in Columbus, Ohio. Her last patient of the day, Ms. Rountree, hurt her back yesterday while moving a couch (acute pain) with her roommate. Ms. Rountree has never been seen in Dr. Tran or her practice in the past.
Ms. Rountree notes she has been using Ibuprofen, Tylenol, rest, ice, and heat with minimal relief. She reports she has used MS Contin in the past for an injury with relief and prefers this medication due to the twice-a-day dosing. She also requests a 30-day supply because she “likes having extra at home”. Nayely refers to the practice guidelines for prescribing controlled substances and asks Ms. Nayely a series of questions, including, “Are you pregnant, or are you trying to be? Has the medication given you any ill effects? What other medications are you on? Do you have any liver or kidney problems?”.
After Ms. Rountree answers these questions satisfactorily, Nayely notes this on the online charting system. Nayely then asks Ms. Rountree to wait while she leaves the exam room to fill a prescription.
Questions:
Can Nayely prescribe MS Contin for this patient per the Ohio Administrative Codes (OAC)? Why or why not?
Assuming you decide to prescribe a scheduled II medication, how many days’ worth of medication can Nayely prescribe per the OAC?
Should Nayely obtain an OARRS report on this patient (this answer is subjective)? Defend your answer.

Review one additional state’s practice guidelines specific to scheduled II medications. If you do not live in Ohio, select your current state of residence. After reviewing this state’s laws and regulations surrounding APRNs and scheduled II medications, compare these with the state of Ohio. Answer the below questions:
Which state did you select? Are the laws and regulations similar? Are they different?
Should Nayley, as a nurse practitioner, have hospital privileges working in Dr. Tran’s office? How does having hospital privileges help the nurse practitioner profession?
