I feel like TV and movies have helped to create this idea that hiring criminals to help stop other criminals is common practice. From my understanding of the Frank Abagnale case, he was released after serving only 2 years of a 12 year sentence due to his involvement with the FBI. Basically, rewarding his help in catching other criminals with time off his sentence. That is all well and good however I’m not sure how effective this is in the long run. For starters, Frank Abagnale’s expertise would only go so far in assisting the FBI, his knowledge is very specific to now outdated check fraud techniques. His expertise would center around his experiance and specific methods of how he got away with check fraud for so long, this however doesnt make him an expert on check fraud or criminology. At some point the FBI would stop using him as a consultant because his knowledge was so spacific and eventually outdated.
Essentially, if a company who wanted to consult a skilled hacker to assist in cyber security it would truly have to come down to who exactly the person was and their credentials and how much information you are trying to learn. For example if a company wanted to hire a hacker to attempt to hoodwink their website in order to learn about the sites weaknesses that would be a huge benefit. However, turning to that hacker and asking them the how to fix the security problems probably wouldn’t result in the best outcomes. In other words, just because I am good at robbing banks doesn’t mean I know a thing about how to run a bank. It also doesnt mean I know all the ways a bank could be robbed, I only know the way I robbed banks.
