Remember to respond to two peers while being respectful of and sensitive to their viewpoints. Consider advancing the discussion in the following ways:
- Post an article, video, or visual to reinforce a peer's idea or challenge them to see their point from a different perspective.
- Engage in conversation or consider asking a question from history, pop culture, the media, or other societal examples that frame abnormal behavior as being weird or uncomfortable.
MEGAN POST
My name is Megan and I am a communications and new media studies major.
Abnormal behavior has been defined throughout history in various ways, often shaped by cultural, social, and scientific perspectives. Initially, it was frequently linked to moral failing or supernatural influences, but modern definitions tend to focus on psychological and medical frameworks that emphasize patterns of behavior that are statistically rare, cause distress, or impair functioning. In my view, abnormal behavior can be understood as actions or thoughts that significantly deviate from societal norms and expectations, often resulting in distress or dysfunction in an individual’s life. Different cultures may define abnormal behavior based on their unique beliefs, values, and social norms; what appears normal in one culture might be deemed abnormal in another due to divergent views on mental health, spirituality, or social roles. Contributing factors to abnormal behavior include biological influences like genetics and neurochemistry, psychological aspects such as trauma and personality traits, and social factors like cultural expectations and family dynamics. These influences relate to various programmatic themes: self-care involves recognizing and addressing personal mental health needs, social justice highlights the impact of societal inequalities on mental health, emotional intelligence fosters awareness of emotional responses in oneself and others, career connections underscore the influence of professional environments on mental well-being, and ethics pertains to the respectful treatment of individuals with abnormal behavior. Thus, understanding these factors provides a comprehensive view of abnormal behavior and the challenges faced in its definition and treatment.
LAURIE POST
Well here we go again! I did not like school as a kid or teenager but put me in as an adult and I can soar! My name is Laurie. I have four adult kids and one graduating in May and then my actual reason for living and rank over my kids daily, is my six beautiful grandbabies and one on the way. I will be working on my bachelor’s in psychology while I watch my baby girl living her best life and cheering for varsity. Then in May as she walks across that stage, yes, I will absolutely cry because the empty nester is going to go crazy with it being so quiet. In college she will also be taking a psychology path while cheering and I cannot wait to do this journey with her. We live in Nebraska along with two of her brothers and the other brother and sister live in Kansas. I was in nursing for over 25* years and finished up my LPN degree in 2011 and then a divorce found me and two kids left moving back to Nebraska to start over at which point neither of my kids wanted me gone all of the time so for them I hung it all up and a year later COVID hit. I have always gravitated to working with kids because they are completely innocent so I will be focusing on youth in the justice system. So why now, well God teaches you quick if you do not take care of your body, it will take you out and my moment was on the softball field after an amazing hit to left field. I swore id stop playing in my 25th year but nope 23 yrs and done. In March 2023 I lost my mom tragically and in October of that same year I lost my ability to walk. No idea why or how and fifteen specialists later no close answers. For four months I was unable to walk and have slowly started coming back to where I am now which is unable to drive, unable to work and falling on uneven surfaces or in my home. So, it is time to figure out my path to work again without taking a large toll on my body and there is nothing I love more than helping people. Cannot wait to make memories here with y’all!!!

Ironically, it is normal to perceive abnormal behavior as atypical, uncomfortable, or strange. However, the labels that we use to describe abnormal behavior could contribute to its stigma. In your own words, describe how abnormalities in the mind are not really different from other physical or biological abnormalities.
