Case Study of an Advocacy Piece
For this assignment, think about an issue that is personal and meaningful for you and one that you think you could be a good advocate for. Begin a research campaign to investigate what is currently being done on this issue, and then write a case study on one specific advocacy project that you have come across in your research.
Part One will be an introduction to the issue, explaining what it is and why it is urgent. The introduction should be concise and informative, drawing on your research to establish the most important elements of the issue, including the history, the current state of advocacy including progress made by previous advocacy, the audience/s for this issue, and the contexts in which it occurs.
Part Two: Examine one current piece of advocacy on this issue, and analyze it rhetorically, determining it strengths and weaknesses. What is being accomplished? Who is being reached? Who isn’t? Who or what has been overlooked? What is the scope? How is it being presented or delivered? What still needs to happen? Could this be more effective? How so?
Part Three: Reflect and speculate about what you personally can do as an advocate for this subject. What is your sphere of influence? Who can you reach? Where would you begin and what kind of buy-in would you need? What do you think would be an effective next step or helpful addition or expansion to the current advocacy?
