Exploring the effectiveness of Partial Hospitalization Programs in decreasing hospital readmission rates, increasing medication compliance and improving long-term outcomes and quality of life in adults with psychiatric conditions.

PICO Question; 

In adults with mental health conditions (P) that are not compliant with medication therapy and are not showing psychiatric improvement, how does a partial hospitalization program (I) versus standard outpatient care (C) affect compliance, long-term patient outcomes, and hospital readmission rates?

Access to research articles through the library: The library has many journal databases that will be useful in this assignment as well as throughout your graduate program and professional career. Many of these databases have links to full-text journal articles and most have abstracts of journal articles that you can print out that will help you write your papers. Examples of these databases are CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsychINFO, ERIC, and HaPI. Many of these journal databases are restricted to only FIU faculty and students.

How do you access restricted databases from home? Use the 14-digit number on the back of your FIU One ID card. Before you can access restricted databases from home, you MUST have a valid government issued ID card and Panther ID number to obtain a photo FIU One ID Card, call UPC 305-348-3910 or BBC, 305-919-5406 to obtain the “walk-in” photo ID hours; the photo ID offices are located at MMC, PG-1 100 and on the BBC, WUC 143.

Once you obtain your FIU One ID card, go to the  FIU Library websiteLinks to an external site.. When you access the Library’s home page, click on Off-Campus Access. The link provides instructions on how to access the restricted library databases. Follow the instructions, and if you are not able to connect from off-campus, you may need to activate your library number. The Green Library is the main library at FIU. The best place for assistance is the Reference Desk. The personnel will help you find journals and/or books so you can copy articles and book pages (copiers are available). You can use any of the computers located in the library to do searches. In order to check out materials (such as books), you will need your FIU One ID card.

Directions for the research critique:

1. For this assignment, please retrieve and review  one (1) published research articles (Either one quantitative or one qualitative study)  related to the Evidence-Based Research Clinical Question of Interest. Use one of our Library Databases such as CINAHL or Medline

Use a research article  published within the last 7 years.  Do not use textbooks, opinion articles, commentaries, case studies, or literature review articles.

The research article must be referenced in strict accordance with the APA format.

· Author(s), Date, Title of Article. Journal, Volume #, Issue #, Page Numbers.

Note: Please follow APA format closely. Remember that the title of articles and books are lower-cased except for the first word or after a colon (:). Also, remember that Journal names are capitalized and italicized and that book titles are also italicized.

Use the specific critique guidelines presented in Polit and Beck (2016) for quantitative or qualitative studies found on pages 102-109.

1. Please  provide the headers and the questions identified in Polit and Beck so that it is easy to follow in grading your paper.

2. Answer each critique question, section by section.

3. Provide specific information from the article itself as you discuss and critique these studies so that I can understand the details from the study.

4. Do not just answer “Yes” or “No” to the question but  make critical comments about the research components of each study.

5. In each section of the critique, you are to  identify the strengths and weaknesses, presenting your own rationale (positive and negative critique comments) about the value of this research.
