In this unit, we will be comparing previous stories read, “A House for Hermit Crab” and “Where is Home, Little Pip?” Day 1 Students will be able to review and identify parts of a book (front cover, back cover, author, illustrator) Students will be able to identify the sequence of a story, (beginning, middle, end) by using a story sequence chart, learn new vocabulary. Day 2 Students will also be able to compare the animals from each story and their homes. Day 3 Teacher will introduce ponds and compare the size to lakes and oceans. Day 4 Students will learn about the different animals that lives in ponds (fish, ducks, frogs) and how they move. Day 5 Students will learn about plants in the pond and which parts of the pond plants can live. (water lilies, cattails) Math The topic for the unit in Math is Shapes. In this unit, students will know how to use a shape’s attribute show the similarities and differences of a shape. Day 1: Shapes of our World Students will be shown different images where they are to identify the different shapes they see in the picture. Day 2: Going on a Shape Hunt
Teacher will read the book Shapes, Shapes, Shapes, by Tana Hoban (1996) and allow students to predict the upcoming events/shapes from the story. We will discuss the different shapes in the story and learn the Shape Hunt Chant. Day 3: Making Shapes Students will be able to create shapes by composing (putting together) other shapes. They will use two or more basic shapes to make a larger shape. Day 4: Building a House with Shapes Students will build a house using different shapes the teacher gives them. Day 5: Tangram Puzzle Students will create a tangram puzzle and describe the shapes used in the puzzle.
